A new tripod or more knowledge

Re: A new tripod or more knowledge

Get the tripod and mount his $20 book on it and read it there, have it both ways!

Seriously the tripod is worth far more. The course is for those with money, or have a hot script, if you need a tripod, you're not ready for the course!

The book will detail outinfo you need right now. Most courses are emotional motivational meetings rather than info / skill building because info & skill take quite a while to accumulate.

in the future when you have extra cash....attend it.

I don't disagree with the advice, but needing a tripod doesn't mean I'm "not ready" for the course. Developing a marketable film concept takes time. Much needs to be done and redone before the first frame is shot. I am quite sure that many succesful filmmakers don't own most of their gear; rather renting or borrowing.

I've been to many seminars, both of the practical and motivational variety. Sometimes the latter is more important than the former. You can have all the knowledge and gear in the world. If you don't have the motivation to put it to use, what's the point? Still, based on the materials, it seems there is quite a lot of factual info in his course.

Still I am buying the tripod.

Re: A new tripod or more knowledge

Dov's seminar isn't about developing a story concept or making a marketable package. It's about the nuts and bolts of actually producing it. So ideally you would already have your script and a little bit of money available, and just not necessarily know what the next step should be towards getting it made. That's what he teaches you, so when you're at that point, and you're so fired up and ready to go but you're not sure you know everything you need to go, that's when you spend a weekend with him and he tells you basically everything you'll need to know to turn your script into footage, and some ideas on how to go about selling it.

Re: A new tripod or more knowledge

go for it! Then grace us with the wonders of what that new fluid head does for you. for me, it was great to get out of crappy tripod hell. I spent a long time holding back from buying a decent one and now feel that it was a lot of time wasted. The amount of stress a shitty tripod causes is not worth it… especially when you have a dvx to mount.
