A New Soft Case

Hi folks,

I am working with a case manufacturer on a new case for the DVX100/A. I want to have it be the coolest case ever. To date we have offered two different soft cases and while both seem nice to me, I am wondering how they seem to you. Too big, too small, enough compartments?

Anything I should consider in the design of a new case? What accessories do you normally want to carry?

Looking to make a "dream" case and want your input.

Thanks,

Jan

Re: A New Soft Case

I would like to have a soft case that would be able to fit in an over head bin [carry on] . I would never check in my camera again, had to many bad experiences

Re: A New Soft Case

I need one that accomodates a bellows hood with french flag. To keep the case short, I would like to see a bottom compartment for wireless and less frequently used gear.

Re: A New Soft Case

U know the panasonic case made by petrol the yellow and black one...it would be nice if it was a little wider and a longer and a tad tallerso i wouldnt have to take of my shotgun when im running around on location...

it should be a softcase with hard interior walls....

also have a hard false bottem accessable from the top underneath the camera and also maybe detachable from the bottem to hold mics, wireless, accessories...maybe it could zip off or even hinge off.....

on the inside on one of the sides there should be a plastic compartment where you can store adapters and little things ...double AA bateries ..other small things..

different size elastic bands on sides for tapes and batteries...

a built in hardcase for shotgun mic to be put in false bottem...

this is just an idea...but have a built in battery charger or ac/dc converter where u can either plug it into ure cars cigarette lighter or a wall outlet with the change of one cable...maybe built into the bottem where u could keep batteries connected...

extremely comfortable sholder straps...with optional backpack style strap for long computes so u dont feel like u have a hunch when u take it off...

easy access zip top with overhang to heep water out...water proof exterior...

customizable layout of insterts...non velcro...the velcro crap pisses me off such a pain to get perfect..

A pouch of some sort to hold filters maybe on the top easy access zipper flap...

out side zipper pockets....

folder style pockets for gels, magazines, paperwork, storyboards...white card......

Re: A New Soft Case

One complaint I've heard about the Panasonic brand camera case is that it has some "Digital Cinema" label on it's outside that screams "steal me".

Can you give me a measurement?

Can you measure your bellows and french flag and tell be HxWXD?

Thanks,

Re: A New Soft Case

i cant seem to find the dimensions online...the model number is AG-YUSC100 ...when i get home from work tonite ill break out the measureing tape...

another request would be a form fitting foam bottem for the camera so it fits perfectly in one place....

Re: A New Soft Case

Okay, I think the above suggestions in the case design are great! I would love most of those suggestions, especially being able to keep my mattbox on, my shotgun and my wireless reciever mounted in the hotshoe (16" x 6 1/2 x 10") as well as a seperate compartment (or 2) for extras. I currently have a Tamrac teck series case that fits my assembled camera, my batteries, filters and xlr cable, etc.

But... this is what I have been looking for (or thinking of designing) for some time. I do a lot of international travel with several cameras. Hence, I would like 2 bags (convertable from shoulder strap to backpack) that fit perfectly in a 1650 pelican case. The softcase(s) would need to be a clean, slick retangle design. A single bag would fit in overhead and 2 (side-by-side) in the pelican case. The inside of the pelican case is 28 1/2" x 17 1/2" x 8", this would mean 2 cases the size of 14 x 17 1/2 x 8" would fit in there perfectly. I could bring 2 cameras to rugged locations, water proof and dust proof, and when I arrive, I'd have the portability and ease of backpacks for each camera.

PS - if this is all good for you Jan, I'd like to place my order today.

Re: A New Soft Case

I measured my cam with the rods, mattebox, and follow focus on, and it comes out to about 10" wide or so...

How long? How high?

Re: A New Soft Case

10.5" wide x 16.5" long (eyepiece straight) x 9" tall

This is without the frenchflag attached, and no mic. Just camera, rods, mattebox, and followfocus.

With the french flag (which is a nuisance to remove) attached:

10x12x18.5

Without the flag attached:

10x8x18.5

These dimensions allow for tripod plate and the microphone.

I have the Cavision bellows hood with flag.

Thanks!

Re: A New Soft Case

How about a hard plastic skeleton, as well as a bit of a hip indent (so the bag/case forms to the hip a bit. As well as a light coloured interior. Outside pockets that fit large batteries and a case of five tapes. And the most important you have to be able to carry it on a plane. I am all for the no or small logo thing as well.

Re: A New Soft Case

Jan,

What timeline are you looking at for development and production? Within the next few months?

Re: A New Soft Case

jan,
i've had very good luck combining two items:

the cinebags production case with the interior velcro pouches removed

and

i then add the 'cradle' from a porta brace DV camera case (not sure which model)

add a piece of dry-erase board (white, plastic finish) cut the same size as the back wall of the cinebag and wedged into place (hard to explain - easy once you see the bag) and it works GREAT!

this might be a place for you to start or consult as far as sizing and rigidity. it fits my DVX perfectly WITH my chrosziel 4x4, bracket1 wireless RX bracket (w/1 or 2 RX) Senn 66 all attached. the DVX comes out of the case READY TO GO - which is very important since i do mainly ENG work. i can't take the time to re-configure the camera every time.

the pockets on the center front are sized for (top) DVX batteries (bottom) tapes.

when i fly, i strip the camera and put it back in the portabrace case that i originally bought, then outgrew - then put the cinebag in a large rubbermaid container, fill it with stuff and tape it shut. check baggage - no problem. carry the cam on, then when i get to the location, re-configure for the gig.

email me direct if i can give you pics, etc....

good luck - its a great project!
