A new paradigm for distributing feature films

How would you setup a new feature film distribution system? I am interested in developing a new model for film distribution and would like your input. Traditional methods work well for established large budget Hollywood movies. But as you probably know it is nearly impossible to get your feature film into the "system".
What is your idea? Please feel free to throw out any idea, thought or experience you have. How would you set up the new system?

Yes Finding Investors is one issue that needs to be considered.

distribution on a large scale without word-of-mouth is somewhat pointless. you'd first have to devise a way to reach more people that would justify distribution on a large scale. this isn't nessesarly bad.

If you want slightly more wide spread distribution in an effort to gain more support that's one thing.

Trying to compare distribution of your feature film as compared to the one of a 'hollywood' film is another.

what's your intent? to just give it away? to have people pay for it?

it doesn't matter how fast you can get copies of your movie to all reaches of the world if people don't even know about it. :)

I think an idea that has worked on a smaller scale is creating a community of SERIOUS, TALENTED film-makers that are dedicated to their craft and dedicated to creating an audience. First of all, a webiste would help; but this website would have to be well promoted so it actualy gets some exposure. This would require money...which is not impossible, but difficult to aquire. Donations from fellow film-makers, possibly even studios is a possibility. Another possibility for aquiring funds would be by charging film-makers a reasonable price to promote their media.

I think this has already been done.
