A new logo

Re: A new logo

Rich  ;D  Amazing!!!  You all are great!  I can't design anything, that I like, and you all whip up stuff in a matter of minutes.

Actually, TC, my big mouth started this mess by criticizing the new DVXuser logo and saying, "We have a VERY talented group of indivduals here, surely someone can whip out a good clean design that Jarred will like, or we can develope one together, over time."

Edit: I did graphic design for 12 years (in my past life), the last 3 years were for the Microsoft brand. Designing for Microsoft can yank the fun out of design for anyone. Please take the following ramblings as nothing more than Art Direction, from a former Art Director. Maybe it will help focus the group.

Keep it simple (1 or 2 colors) at first, so it will look good on shirts and business cards or stickers.  Some of the best logos are just simple fonts (Panasonic, Microsoft, McDonalds, Coke, Nike, etc.).  After Jarred agrees on the brand then, for the website, build a montage masthead (use Rich's photos ;) ) and drop the new logo over it. Walla!

Sorry to be a jerk.  I have super-logo (ego) issues.  :'(

Re: A new logo

PK-

The designs you're seeing here are treatments. I (not sure of others) design the brand first, then treatments as such. The logo treatments I did (metalic/plasticy) are also in vector 1-2 color as well (so as i mentioned earlier can be transitioned across mediums). The spot on the site should be treated. Microsoft (as you mentioned) has a vector logo which is their brand, and then various treatments of it depending on usage and arena. They have 3d shiny treatments, full color treatments, flat vector treatments, etc...

As far as a photo montage... way too busy and cluttered in concept.  Less is more. We already have to compete with rotating banners, etc up there in the same masthead.

Sorry to be a jerk. I have super-design (experience) issues. ;D

Re: A new logo

Sorry PK - I can't seem to shake the snazzy 90's look.  ;)

For the record I think Jarred's new logo is fine - I'm just killing time.  :P

Re: A new logo

i really want to design somthing serious for this , but have 0 time right now. i hope this doesnt get wrapped up too soon we get more ideas in.

Re: A new logo

oh I don't see this being wrapped up anytime before... oh I dunno... '06?

Re: A new logo

I think this contest will be completed in a matter of milliseconds.  :D You blink and there's 2 new logos. But '06 sounds good to me. I should have atleast 1/2 a design by then. :'(

Kai, you're right. When I said "montage," I didn't mean animated, as in a video montage (i'm on dial-up, I hate animated graphics!!! Except for Bluespiders avatars). I meant a graphic using 1-3 DVX photos placed together to form a nice background for the masthead, not distracting from the logo or banners. ;)

Re: A new logo

matthew that was a sweet holidays touch you had going there.
It reminds me of Mr Hudson said about how nice it would be to have changing logos for everyday or month or season

Re: A new logo

I think it's worth putting some time and effort into a logo that we're all going to be seeing constantly and that represents the site. If the logo is great, then it'll be worth putting on shirts and other swag--if not--it'll disappear into the background noise.

Jarred's new logo may not be to everyone's taste, but it:

--Reads easily, even from a distance (some of the logos in this thread are difficult to read)

--Has a color scheme consistent with the site.

--Graphically represents the fact this is a filmmaking site.

--Uses font style and lower case to represent the friendly informal nature of the site, while still looking clean and professional.

Just some things to keep in mind when working on a logo. I think it's also helpful to look at some contemporary design trends in a magazine like the Communication Arts Design Annual (now out). One recent logo I really like is the new BP "Helios" logo. Very simple, but unique and reflective of the company's goals.

Re: A new logo

Oh, i didnt know this was a serious post. I just threw that together while I was waiting for something else to render thinking it was just a have fun post. Mine is definitly not logo material.

Re: A new logo

OK, I'll ask the question that hasn't been asked, yet will encourage the best designs.....

What's in it for the winner (other than the satisfaction of a job well done)?

Re: A new logo

One million dollars. <puts pinky up to lips, grins widely to himself>

Re: A new logo

I think you only get the satisfaction that your logo is being used by this wonderful community.
