A MUST READ!

Re: A MUST READ!

Actually, I want to break every rule on that page in a music video. Could be fun to get as cliche and overblown as possible. It could work.

Re: A MUST READ!

I have that list printed and on my wall in my office.

Speed - I think the author is mostly saying not to use some of these on purpose just because they "look cool" I don't think he is saying never use them period. IMO.
I have a sense of humor, but I don't think the authors wrote this piece in a spirit of fun.  They really are sick of what they see as the same old crap from their students.

I can identify with this sentiment, to some degree.  But it just sounds to me like this is criticism without alternative suggestions for how to deal with a failure on the student's part to tell a story effectively.
Well poo poo to you. :-[

Unless your asking questions about 'the clunk' or what tapes to use. ;)

I hear they have shot's that'll clear up that "clunk" now. :D

Well poo poo to you. :-[
Youll need to clarify here pook. Do you mean "Well Art History to you" or literally poo poo. See, around here that particular phrase can get confusing for those whove been here a while. ;)

RE: DUMPS:
I agree with both sides of this view. On the one hand, I despise "rules" and shouldnt's and whatnot, but at the same time, I think the overall jest of the thing is saying to really pay attention to how you setup and execute each shot, and be fully aware of how your results are going to come off. But as far as avoiding cliche in your movies, might as well give it up. To quote the Barenaked Ladies..."Its all been done".

Re: A MUST READ!

I think the quote in the second paragraph sums up those who so "strongly" disagree with the authors conclusions perfectly.

I quote:

[glow=red,2,300]"If you're a genius, then go ahead--- break these rules.

But let's face it, if you think you're a genius, you're not."[/glow]

Elequent, and true.

Re: A MUST READ!

..its a great list for people who want to use a technique but have no understanding of the technique and how to apply it. its like knowing how to say the word apple, but not knowing how to use it in a sentance and saying. "the other day i went apple store and got apple". like when you and your friends or family have a "group thing" and some outsider tries to use it or say it.. and has no idea what it really means or how to apply it correctly and they just sound/look like an idiot trying to look or sound cool.

people use the things in this list without understanding how to use them effectivley, and that is the crime.. its not the notion of doing the things in and of itslef.. its about people simply doing them because they think it would be cool in their movie. and because they are inexperienced and have yet to learn how to properly craft their films and really tie together whats visually being shown to the story they end up using these things ineffectively and in a very cliche manner thata about the equivilent of .. well... a big dump. weve all done it. im no exception by any means, but im one of the few ..yes, few... wise enough to learn from it and move on. its only those that cant get over themselves and cover their wake of crappy films with the labels of "artistic expression" and "thinking out of the box" that need to wake up and smell their dumps. any story worth telling is worth learning and taking the time to effectively tell it well.

i see people using cranes and dollies and other camera moves or onscreen effects or action all the time that just really serves no purpose to the story being told other than .. "look at how cool my crane is.. oooooh now look at my doooooollllyyyyyyy" i could easily say dump on that as well. I was just telling John Hudson the other day that in his last zombie short his camera movement in there actually really added to the story and how cool it was to see someone just get it right IMHO.

Re: A MUST READ!

Well poo poo to you. :-[

what a comeback

EDIT
but yea, I read that list two years ago and have never laughed so hard as I did then - one of my very first films was there exactly how he described it...the tortured artist film...if i can find it I;ll digitize it and post it up sometime

Re: A MUST READ!

Maybe there is a benefit to starting in filmmaking as an old man...none of those things really occured to me. I found it very funny actually.

Re: A MUST READ!

So I had this idea where a big ass bald eagle is heading straight towards the camera and I was going to zoom out at the same time... guess I better shelf that one for now.

Re: A MUST READ!

No, you can do it. Just make sure you cut to a shot of the eagle flying away as you zoom in. Oh, and do it in a mirror. That's genius.

Re: A MUST READ!

I think you have to be juggling three ferret's at the same time for it to be considered "artistic" rather than "amateurish".

btw jim, it "was" posted for a laugh, unfortunatly, some people chose to take it seriously, supressed guilt i assume. :D
