a major setback

i've got a dilemma and i would like to see if anyone has any input. basically i've been writing a comedy that i was hoping to shoot and submit to film festivals. yesterday the guy playing one of the two main characters said he can't do it. unfortunately, i wrote the part specifically for him and the character is dependent on his comedic timing/style of humor. it's going to be very difficult to find someone that can play his part.

does anyone have suggestions? should i try to find someone else? rewrite the character? submit a short film instead of a feature? do a different movie entirely? let me know if you have ideas.

I'd try to find someone else who could pull it off. I'd at least give it a shot. If nobody works, you can try a rewrite later.

I'd at least put some effort into finding someone else - if no one does it for you though perhaps re-write the character would be best. Doing a whole other movie or short would put you back at square 1 for the most part wouldnt it? I'd try to avoid losing all of your pre-production work.

I agree. Try and find someone else to do the role. He might have a different interpretation of it that you might actually like even better. Everything happens for a reason.

Yeahp, I'll agree as well, try recasting, and if not, just rewrite some of the dialogue, etc.
