a mac question

Hi guys, Not a FCP question, but I figured here is where I'd find the answer.

I just got a Macbook and want to transfer files of all kinds from my main system to the laptop. How do I achieve that if possible? Otherwise it's cd-roms, urghh..

All you have to do is run a firewire cable from one system to the other then restart one holding down the button T and it will show up as a firewire drive on the other system and you can just drag and drop the files you want transfered. When finished just restart the system and you will have all of your files.

The procedure is described (at least it used to be) in the laptop manual. Also, the last time I bought a new Mac (a year and a half at this point), it also had an Assistant application for transferring info from the previous computer which would pick up some things, such as settings, that you could easily miss if you were doing everything manually.

"Migration Assistant"

Just do a search for that, and it'll walk you through the process.

what?

how do you hook a fire wire to both lap tops? or is that not the fire wire to cameras? i little confussed... and then hold T to the windows computer? then drag and drop.

yeah I don't think that will work the same from windows to mac?? Someone else will have to comment on that one.

but basically all your doing is mounting your laptop as a hard drive. (when you do it on a Mac, don't know about the PC.)

whatever computer you want to transfer stuff to is the one that you shut down and hold the t on when starting back up. you just use a fire wire 400 cable that is six pin on both ends. A camera FW is usually FW 400 but most camers use a 4 pin to 6 pin setup. the 4 pin side being the camera side.

You have to have a 6 pin to 6 pin firwire cable, not the 6 to 4 that is used to hook up a camera to your computer.

The question didn't say anything about a PC, it just said desktop so I assumed the desktop was a mac. If it is a PC to mac thing, then it won't work with the firewire cable.

for PC to Mac:
if you can get the computers onto the same network, then setup a shared folder on your PC, open up a finder window on your macbook. go to "network" choose the workgroup folder for your PC, double click on the PC's name, and mount the shared folder.

My bad, I was referring to hmfilmer and what he said. I thought he was you and you was him and I was....just a little confusion??

mac to mac: use a 6pin to 6pin FW cable and startup the laptop holding down the "T" key...wait for a blue screen with yellow FW symbol and then the laptop will be mounted on the desktop computer just like any other external drive...then drag and drop
