A little something...work in progress

Whipped this up all in Cinema4D in a few hours the other night. It's for some boards for a concept I'm working on. Didn't really get a chance to get deep into texturing/lighting or any great amount of detail, but thought I would post anyway.

Here's a quick breakdown on how it was made:

I used a BezierNURBS for the cliff, added some more point and closed it on the Y then roughed out the general shape. I kept the subdivisons low (only 24 each way) then made it editable once I had the general shape.

I put that into a HberNURBS and tweaked to taste. I selected the top polygons and used the Hair module to make the grass. At first I only had the very top polygons selected for the grass plane, but I extended the selection down the sides for some more realism/spreading.

Next I added a backlight for the grass, used an area light at 600% with an orange color then had a key in front high right, white light at 100% intensity.

I created two textures for the cliff, one as the base with a gradient going from the dark grass color to the brown. Added some noise in the bump channel. Pretty simple. The second texture is the green splothces...I haven't got this one where I wanted...I was testing sub-polygon displacement with noise in the alpha and color to get a moss like effect.

Added a sky preset, tweaked a bit, then GI for render. I'll post more when I get it done.

You really have to dig C4D's hair plugins. I'll bet you could even animate the grass with something like Lightwave's particle "affectors". Great work.

Nice composition as a photo too.

ps. this kind of thing really makes me look forward to the newest Terragen.

Never had a chance to try Terragen...

I'm going to attempt to use dynamics/wind to animate the grass...depending on speed, etc....also depending on if this concept ever goes to motion.

Thanks for the composition compliment...to me that's very high on the list of importance.

@surreal...good call, never thought of it like that. The next piece is actually a small boy chasing something on the ledge so I guess it continues to parallel "where the sidewalk ends" even more, though I wasn't thinking about it when I made it.

Was always one of my favorite books as a child, cant wait to see your finished product.
