A little off topic but I have a few questions

I am having my brother create a website for me. I was thinking of going the template route but at this point I don't have tons of clients, so for now I would like to keep it cheap. He knows what he is doing and will do a good job, but I don't know what I need to buy. I'm assuming I need to purchase a domain, and he said it has to let him upload via FTP, which I am vaguely familiar with. So, what is everything I need to do on my end, and also what are some companies to go through?

You need a domain name and a webhost. My suggestion on a webhost is NovaHost. First step is to set-up a hosting account, next register the domain name, after that you need to point the Domain Name Server (DNS) to your hosts DNS servers. From there it's a simple FTP upload process.

looks like hosting is free through novahost, but can I also buy a domain through them? If not what would people recommend for buying a domain?

No, can't buy a domain through them. Domain Registration suggestion is godaddy.com. You can use one of the following discount codes as well:

TGS1 - Enter code to get 10% off entire order

TGS2 - Enter code to get $5 off any order $30 or more

TGS3 - Enter code to get any .COM domain name for $7.99

TGS4 - Enter code to get 15% off any order of $75 or more

TGS5 - Enter code to get $10 off any order of $40 or more

TGS7 - Enter code to get .biz/.net/.org domain names for $7.99

awesome man....lots of help....and the hosting through nova host is that ad free and stuff like that? just seems a little too good to be true if you you know what I mean

Yep, ad free. Nathan (the owner) has a bunch of other websites where he places ads (on his own sites) that more than cover the costs of operating the server. I've got about 5 websites right now on their server, all ad free.
