A little more detail on AVC-Ultra

Does this suggest new P2 based media? I'm not sure the current Type-II cardscan sustain a datarate necessary for 4:4:4 4K?
The cards can, you should be able to support those data rates on at least "E" and "A" series cards, and probably the "R" series too; they were rated for 640mbps sustained data transfer rates.

However, on the Panasonic blog a few months ago there was a slightly curious statement made about the HPX250 and why it can't do 1080/60p; in effect it said "the cards are fast enough to support the data rate, but it would take the next generation of P2 products to implement it" or something. Sounded to me like they were saying that the throughput of the processing engine or the card interface weren't up to the task of handling 200mbps, but the cards themselves were?

I bet they announce P3. A smaller, faster card that can still be used with P2 products via an adapter and firmware updates to the P2 devices.

Most probably bigger capacity, usb3 p2adapter. But id like to see that.

Wow. No USB3 adapter. 64GB costs $630... what the heck? Why do people like P2 again?

Maybe this sounds naive, but why not use SSDs?

This is not a naive question at all, seeing as Blackmagic Design's $300 HyperDeck Shuttle can write at 1400mbits/sec sustained to a consumer SSD - it's certified to work on a 512GB Crucial M4, which only costs $631.

So... for the cost of a 64GB P2 card, you can get a 512GB SSD, which is faster.

OK it's a little more compact and theoretically reliable... but I'd much rather have a compact camera head, sending 4K to two outboard SSD recorders simultaneously, strapped to my belt. To me, redundancy is the best form of reliabilty.

Panasonic had better drop P2 prices and increase capacity VASTLY... pronto.

Perhaps they're following the Godzilla sequence .. after "Ultra Godzilla" I think there
was "Super Mecha" ... SuperMechaAVC has a nice ring to it.

It's good to know the bandwidth of the cards can go +600Mbs (sustained). For some reason,
I thought they maxed at around 300Mbs .. which isn't enough to do 4:4:4 4K without significant
(and undesired) compression.

panasonic could do a SATA port for ssds
then you can add a 'SATA to p2 card' adapter.
or if you feel like it 'sata to sdxc or CF udma.'
future proofed as well as backwards compatible.

I like that idea .. with some sort of locking caddy (ala Samurai).
SATA-III preferably.

P2 does have a RAID-like structure, so it's likely more reliable .. but
SSD will have RAID in the same form-factor in the not-too-distant
future .. it will be much more expensive than the equivalent SSD ..
but at least you could choose.
