A.IRIS…What’s this all about? After working with my camera settings, experimenting with my gammas, matrix’s, and detail settings, I’ve always bypassed the A.Iris. My understanding is its helpful for underexposing my video while in auto exposure mode to prevent blowouts. And I see many users set theirs to minus-2 or something. I like “what you see is what you get” so I leave mine at 0 and standby the zebras. Am I missing something?

No, you're doing it the best way, living by the zebras.

The A.Iris feature allows you to bias the autoexposure system towards underexposure or overexposure. It comes in most handy with the cinelike gamma curves, which don't have a knee function and which can cause ugly blowouts in overexposed areas, so the system defaults to a -2 or so on the A.Iris for scene files that default to one of the cinelike gammas.

But if you're watching your zebras and not allowing anything to blow out, you don't have to worry about it.
