'A Guide to Shooting HDR TV' by Art Adams

Very useful and informative read. Thank you for posting.

After recently seeing HDR footage on a proper display from a high profile show that is finishing in both SDR and HDR, I gotta say that there were some scenes that really blew my mind. Not sure if lifelike is that right word, but what I can say is that I could envision it being difficult to go back to seeing SDR the same way.

An unwelcome side effect of the increased dynamic range in the highlights was that lights in the background that helped illuminate/create depth and contrast, etc, were waaay too bright. Very distracting. The effect was not unlike being followed by a car with super bright, bare LED headlights. Harsh on the eyes to say the least. This was a highly controlled set where the street lights and so forth could be black-wrapped, knocked down, etc. For lower budget productions (more my level), shooting for HDR on city streets in which a person is not able to control all the light will prove very challenging indeed. Be interesting to see future developments adjusting the roll off in highlight (and shadows) as Mr Adams mentions in his elucidation.

Sidenote: my quiet little dream is to see an HDR finish of the Friedkin remastered 'Sorceror' on a huge screen near my house. Note to self, start lobbying BAM cinematek. The screening a few years ago with Mr Friedkin was max capacity. Unlikely, but hey a man can dream.
