In my next move I have a scene where I get to pull off a guy getting an ice pick through his cell phone into his head. I was just looking for some good ideas on how to shoot it.

well of course editing will play a big part, but Im talking about shooting it old school so that I dont have to use after effects

Well, you could find a real volunteer... Nah,..... that won't work. Well it would work, but it might end your career early.

OK off the top of my head:

How about, Practice filming angles with someone swinging a stick (the stick is a stand in for the deadly pick) toward the back of another person's head. Make sure the other person is far enough away for safety; at least a few feet from the potential contact point, the camera will make it look look like direct contact will occur. Line up the camera, angle, the attackers swing with the ear of the victim's head. This shot will be a full body shot. Shoot it.

At the point where the axe looks like its about to go into the victim's head, you'll cut to a CU where you'll have a quick 1/4 second FX shot, i.e., wig on melon with spike going in ear of head....

next shot, spike sticking out of victim's face, blood gushing out, eyes bugging out.... Go shoot a test of this also.

Then shoot a Med shot of the victim falling down, shattered cell phone tumbling. Cut to Med shot of body hitting floor.... Just do a quick & messy mock up test shoot to see how the shots will cut together.

So we have at least four shots,
1. Full shot of attacker bringing the axe down on head,
2. CU of the axe going through the ear of the head.
3. CU of victim's face w/ fake spike through face, blood gushing, eyes bugged
4. Med shot of the back of the victim falling to floor,"thunk."

extra shots (example)

5. CU shot of the attacker's demonic satisfaction.
6. Full shot of small red fountain of blood fountaining up from the victim's head.
7. CU of blood running across the floor and dripping to full shot of distant body.
8. CU of shattered cell phone still working, with voice on the other end, girl friend complaining about how she is probably giving him an ear ache with all her bitching....

Add more if you want....just play around and experiment.

If this doesn' work for you, you can always copy your favorite axe murder scene, shot for shot.

have fun!

I don't know where you're located, but here in SoCal, I'd look up a special effects person. Contrary to popular belief, it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Here's how I'd do it.
1.Get a styrfoam head and paint it to look like your actor.
2.Show the icepick coming in on a med shot.
3.Shoot a close up of a real ice pick going through the cell phone into the styrofaom head.
4.Go back to a med shoot with the live actor and a fake icepick glued to his head and going through the cell phone. Add some blood and sparks.

I think 10S and Gopher have the right idea. Anything else would be extremely dangerous.

10S is right that the camera angle will make it look like the two people are closer together. But to maximize this effect, use a telephoto (not normal or wide angle) zoom setting on the lens. Telephoto compresses depth and makes things look closer together.

Good luck!
