A Good Super 16 Camera?

Hey Guys.... I been looking for a cool super 16 camera, I shoot with many before but I want your opinion... feel free to go crazy!!
My favorites are :
Arriflex SR2 ( off course)
Eclair NPR ( good solid monster)
Aaton XTR

You see I have this killer script for this feature ... great story, great characters, and the photography that I have plan for this baby is gonna blow you away , is fresh but sort of classic, I did try the a lot of HD CAMS before ( I love the Varicam, even do I try the Genesis ) but I want a more organic and raw look for this one, (not indie) but organic.... I can do this with my DVX with some experimentation that I did before... and I'm pretty sure I can do it with the High end HD cams... but for this one I feel that Super 16 will be a good choice.... anyways.... you gusy can leave you honest opinion

Are you going to buy or rent? If you are going to rent, get the Arri SR2. If you are going to buy, which I'm not sure why you would unless you get work with it or are going to use it for future films, then maybe look into the NPR. What's the budget? If it's decent enough maybe you can look into renting the new Arri 416.

Well, Aaton is the best which ever model, you can't go wrong with any, but Aaton if you can afford it is amazing. Plus you can upgrade an XTR to an Xtera. Also the XTR is the newest of the 3, the eclair is proven but old, the SR2 is big and heavy. Go XTR.

Oh, and as a matter of fact, the highest grossing documentary ever, "March of the Penguins" was shot with 2 Aaton XTR 16mm.

I want to buy...since I have a few golden scripts and I would love to own the cam... so I can just make as many as I want

35 is cheaper. If you're gonna go film, do it right.

Dear Gregg thanks for the commment and you are partially right, you see
I could do it on 35mm.... I could do it on Imax with the Arriflex 65mm of a friend of mine( yes the SOB has one)
But I'm interested on Super 16, I like the medium I like the cameras and what I can get from them for my story... off course I could even do it on HD and go crazy with a 3 varicam shoot or couple of Silicon Imagining cams, but I want a feeling that will bring the story to a perfect sense....

Thanks for your advise ... who knows I end up taking it .... but for noe I know what I want

ps I saw your work ... good job.. I had some friends that work CG.... yours is pretty good

You can't go wrong with the SR2 if your choose to shoot S16, but have you considered shooting 2 perf 35? The new Aaton Penelope looks really interesting to me.

My bro... I would love to use a cma like that... but you have to cinsider that my budget is limited and I planning to buy the cam... that's why I thought on getting either the NPR ( that is classic but is proven to be agreat cam) and also thought about the SR 2 Super 16 that I really like that cam... since is so generic and you can get so many parts and lenses for it

I fully understand, buying something brings up a completely different set of requirements than the renting approach. I myself always rent as I just can't justify owning (couldn't use it enough to make sense).

I am really interested in the 2 perf approach as I have access to a lot of short ends and that seems like a perfect solution for the type of things I want to shoot.

For your situation, you really can't go wrong with an SR2. Will you be buying or renting glass?

Will this be for film out or dvd? If for film out then 35 is the way to go, much cheaper because you don't have to blow anything up but if it's intended for dvd only then super 16 makes sense. I'm also interested in 2 perf as well, it'd be great if I can get a hold of a 2 perf camera because I have a ton of short ends that I would like to shoot.

I 'll be buying also... but I have a great variety of c mount prime lenses ,so I'll be either getting the cam converted or.... I will get an adapter

ps I'll be considering renting but I have plenty of projects that I will aproach next year after I finish my doc.... so who knows maybe I'll get a Penelope .... who knows.... thanks do !!!

Wow, you own a bunch of primes already, then yeah I agree, why not own something to hang them off of. S16 with modern stock is so damn good that you can shoot for any final delivery format without any worries.

Sounds like you will be having a bit of fun next year.

hhehehehe to points.... if I get a 2 perf cam the only thing you need to do is cross the bridge hehehhe that off course you can if I get it
I would love to shoot it on 35 but the cost after ward will go crazy on my budget
I'll be editing on a great hd ready system so it would go to dvd eventually to distribute to agencies and festivals but once you hit a big fest.... there is a lot of people that will pay for the blow up or the transfer.... so .... who knows...
Mean while I'll be doing some great shorts..\\ with Holophopnics Sound ( nobody has done this before... welll completly on holophonics and some others where I will be showing my "DIGITAL Cross Process"

But yeah

who knows... thanks for info and I would love to see some of your work!!!

Hey Martini,

I notice in your sig that you list Buenos Aires. I was down there for a Coca Cola commercial project back in May. The local production company was Wasabi Films who also worked with another production company over in Monte Video Uruguay named Paris Texas Films. Was wondering if you happen to know either of them. A great bunch of people and had an absolute blast hanging out in BA, a terrific city in every way.

Yes I will ... I was hoping doing it this year but a car accident totally slow me a little bit
You see I did this try with some great lenses Canon FD that I use for my still photography.... and I a couple of friends of mine converted their Arris and their Eclairs... into C monut or Nikon Mount and those lenses if you clean them right oooooo damn they are good....I even experimentiot with a Hasselblad lens on a Super 16 cam.... (n little to much) but the quality was GREAT... I'm telling you once you get out of the typical kits that they are set up to just shoot comfortably but expansibly ... yeah is great but you can break more boundaries that you want .... well that's my plan give more than expected... and come with a bang on every film

..... Anyways sorry if I preach a little bit but this are exiting times... Film and Digital geez is all good
