My recent wisdom 1 year into working full-time as a producer in the business...
I have recently realized the power of working smart vs working hard. You'll find many of most powerful and influential people in Hollywood have great educations (Harvard, Northwestern, Yale etc)...my point is that these are smart people. There is definitely a correlation. This is no different than most other industries.
Also, I have realized that some people are "scared of success". I love helping people, it's definitely a passion of mine...people quickly learn this and approach me for help. I help everyone who asks and shows a sincere interest. However some people are just flakey and never follow through, while other people own the opportunity, make it their own and just explode onto the scene. Some people are so illogical and stupid in the face of opportunity and other [smart] people just use common sense and take advantage of it to the fullest. I articulate this stupidity as being "scared of success" because it sounds nicer in conversation.
There are many more words of wisdom I could share, and many more I will surely learn through the years (I'm only 23) but my point of this is be smart, think things through, use common sense and you can make a good living in these business. I travel the world on an expense account and spend my career on production and I can pay my bills. I am very happy and I highly recommend this industry but I have many friends who wouldn't (many who made stupid mistakes that boggle my mind).
Also, before anything get a good education. Even Spielberg, years after being hugely successfu,l realized he needed this and went back to get a degree. People who skip college because they think they'll get a rocket ride into the industry or they don't think they need it are making a huge mistake.
