A good lighting Kit?

I have been reading these forums for the last few months searching for advice on lighting kits. I have very little experience working with lights. I have around 600 dollars to spend and I am trying to get the most bang for my buck. Finally I came across this

http://cart.owens-originals.com/VIPER_3000_TRIPLE_1000_WATT_KIT_p/vip3000.htm

I would also purchase a barndoor and gels for one of the lights.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of kit, or better yet, does anyone HAVE this kit?

I intend on using it for dramatic short films, so my question is this: Is this a good kit that will fit my needs, or should I look at something else. Like I said I don't know much about lights, but this seems like a good start.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Fan-cooled heads. Steer clear for video work for noise reasons.

Keep searching the forum. There are plenty of tips about decent lighting solutions on the super-cheap. That's just not it.

We have been using the Bluline lights that are really cheap and they look just like Arri lights. So far they have been doing a good job. Its not a kit but we have a 2k, 3 1ks, 2 650w, 3 300w and its been enough for most of the stuff we have been shooting.

That ebay kit is a Britek. Those lights have been the source of much controversy here on the board, some liking, many saying their reliability is dismal.

Just spend an hour or two reading this lighting forum. There are already a ton of posts with really good suggestions... people answering the exact same question.

wow, why people look for new when they look for cheap baffels me.

here is the deal, for 600, you can get an omni and a tota new

or look at ebay, 800 and 1k moles sell on ebay all the time for less that 150 bucks. I got two 800 for under 100 each, i got a 1k b&m for less than 100, I got a 1k mole flood, and a 1k b&m flood for 100 pair.

I got 2 no named 500w fresnels for 40 bucks pair.

but if you want new and cheap and reliable, go with the smith victor photo floods, the economy ones, I have 5 of them I bought about 6 years ago, and they still work great.

funny thing is on ebay, a 1k mole fresnel, (moles are some of the best lights ever made) will run the same or less than an omni, which is basicly a redhead and nothing more.

a mole in the field is worth 10 times an omni.

btw, my ebay handle is ihoppoet, since I told you about this treasure trove, if you see my name, don't bid me up.

ive had 2 briteks (the 650 and 300) for a while now. No problems just not as sturdy or versatile as Arri's.

Remember that its not about which kit has most wattage. And dont necessarily look to a "kit". Its hard to truely narrow it down but I would personally get a 650 fresnel, a few 150 fresnels, 300w fresnel, some chinaballs, a 2 or 4 bank fluorescent setup, some small fluorescent accents, and a cheap used 1k or 2k fixture, either a mole or desisti ect.
