A good external HD for the p2 workflow

I am on 2007 MBP and I am trying to figure out the best way to ingest footage from a p2 store (USB) into my Buffalo 1TB External HD (firewire 800). The problem I am having is this that the external decides to crap out at various points during the ingestion. The p2 store is connect on the left side of the laptop and the external is connect on the right. Is it because of the external or because of my MBP. I am thinking all signs point the external.

If that is the case, what would be a good external HD that works well with this workflow?
 
That's strange that it craps out. I'd go with a Western Digital HD. I've also heard that Seagate drives are good - I've never used one. LaCie drives are pretty good as well.
