a forum for beginners

Looking for a woman
kinda wish we had one. the people here are on so many different levels and stages in their careers that it would be nice to have a forum for people just starting out.

i'm sure it must be somewhat frustrating for professionals to get asked basic questions over and over again. likewise, it's difficult for a person who is just starting out that asks questions, but gets criticized and told they just need to read up more.

i would like to see a forum that people contribute tutorial threads on camera settings, audio, lighting, etc. a forum that it's understood there are going to be people asking basic questions on getting started and learning the fundamentals.

agree/disagree?

I think this place is fairly beginner friendly. When I joined (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), I had worked in video for a few years but I was still kind of a noob. This site has been the best thing to happen to me, from a video standpoint. The information is here, you just have to find it.

I'm a "noob" bigtime. Have to say, this is one of the best... no, actualy THE best forum I have ever been part of. There's a fine sense of community and I've always been treated with great respect, even when I've asked what I felt were very basic questions. I've already learned an incredible amount since I've joined, not just through direct questions, but also by reading threads and following links. Just learning that Barry Green's HVX book existed has been a godsend!

I guess I like the idea of being able to communicate with experienced and gifted pro's, and being able to dip my toes in the really deep side of the pool - so from that point of view I'm not so sure about a forum for beginners. It's all in here somewhere, and by sifting through the threads you generaly discover things you didn't even know you needed to know!

As a relative noob, I would like to see more tutorials with footage to back it up... all neatly organized in a centralized and easy to navigate area. Ahhh, to dream.

With that said, this forum is a great resource, regardless.

I was actually treated pretty crappy when I first got on here, but oh well, I'm a thick skin. Especially when I know I'm right...:)

But, in all truthfulness, I am still a noob when it comes to this site and making films, so I think it would be a big help. I wondering if just a collection of "beginner" type threads would be a good beginning. Some of the more large a popular threads that beginners would find informative and useful. They can be about all different subjects and aspects. It would also help going search crazy as well.

Hello everyone. I have to admit. I've been a free grazer of this forum's knowledge for the past two months. And now that i am a member, I can at least feel better about coming here. Anyway, I got the canon XL2 about a month ago. I am not an expert on digital camcorders. I am good at other things but not that experienced on camera operation. The first time in my life, I picked up a camcorder and tried something with it. Only intention here was to try different color settings on the camera. here is the link if you would like to see it. My team will be out in Africa this coming August shooting a 95 minute feature film. I am trying to decide if I should take my two XL2s with 35mm adapters among other equipments or if I should go with an HD. Not sure...here is a link by the way: http://www.ethiofilms.com/abreham_2.wmv

I think the stickies does a fine job of guiding the beginners, it's just a shame that most people are rather impatient for short, simple answer--"What mic do I buy?" "which tripod/camera is the best?" without wanting to invest the time in getting the backgrounds necessary to make their decisions.

I joined this forum last year as a complete noob and I found that if I would just do a search and read through the various stickies I would come away with fairly clear consensus on what works for me. It's not that beginners are treated badly for asking basic questions, it's more because they don't take the time to do the research before asking. Having a beginner forum would only increase the noise to signal ratio as the same questions are asked over and over again and complex concepts are reduced to simple nuggets of information.

Just take the time to read and if you don't understand something, do a search on that. It might not be clear the first time but put in the effort and things will become clear.

I agree that this forum is beginner friendly. I've learned an incredible amount from dvxuser just by doing searches and reading posts by all the knowledgable peeps here. I don't always feel like I fit in, but that hasn't stopped me from reaping the benefits of so much info in one place. Plus, remember you are on the internet. DVXuser searches aren't the only ones out there, they just have more amusing posts to read! haha

I used to be on the Fan film boards for a while. Let me tell you, that's a beginner forum, and it's more frustrating than anything when you're not a beginner. It's more about people not reading or searching for anything. Things like:

"How do I make a film look good?"

If people don't bother to research, read tutorials, whatever, then they shouldn't be making films. That's my opinion. As long as the post is something constructive, well though for a question, then it's fine.

And even though I'm new, I feel like it's beginner friendly already.

Perhaps we should have a forum for teaching beginners? For those who like to teach beginners, help them out, take them under their wing, etc...

Maybe we should have a gang member type "Initiation" Ceremony, of course we can't physically beat up newcomers to the gang so we can do the next best thing.

Older members are allowed to mentally abuse them for 20 posts, if they can handle that then they have past the test. :)

I kid, hehe but its worth a try :)

Maybe they have to make a film. You know, maybe capture snipes on camera. ;)
