a fix for vignetting??

I have some aerial footage that has pretty severe dark blue vignetting in all four corners of the frame. I was wondering if there is a way to get rid of these without simply cropping the shot. When I do this I loose image sharpness. Is there a way to distort just the corners of a frame outwards without affecting the center of the frame? The format is DVCAM

Thanks,

How about placing a masked solid layer vignette over the top of the layer? Perhaps playing with color and the blending mode, you'll be able to negate the vignette (in theory, of course).

As gray mentioned, maybe mask a white solid over top that matches the vignette portion, then use add or screen and see if it cancels a bit of it out.

Thanks for the replys. I'm not sure if a mask would work. Some of the vignetting is a dark blue shade but other parts of it are actually solid black. It looks like maybe we are seeing part of the camera housing on the helicopter. I was wondering if there was a way to stretch the image out just in the corners. The vignetting is actually occuring outside of the TV safe area but it shows up when you play it on a computer screen or project it....

Thanks again,

Well, do what you said, dupe the video layer and put a mask a little less than the size of the vignette and feather it a bit, then on the bottom layer scale it up accordingly and see what happens. Not sure how good it'll look, but worth a shot.

The effect "Mesh Warp" would be good for this. It's a distortion tool that allows you to stretch areas if the video by a user definable grid (or mesh).

graymachine,

Brilliant! That is exactly what I was looking for... worked like a charm. I am fairly inexperienced with AE so thanks so much for your help.

Sounds like you have your solution but I thought I'd throw out there that the Optics Compensation effect would be perfect for this.
