A few questions about the Letus35

JZalutsky said:
yea I didnt even think about that....I zoomed into to about 20mm or so when I shot with the letus because i wanted a 20mm lens to be a 20mm lens and not have any crop factor.
But -- a 20mm lens/crop factor for what? For a 35mm movie camera? Or for a 35mm still camera?

If you want to deliver the movie-type look, you'd be best off to simulate a movie camera's field of view. And that means substantially zoomed in, as compared to the 35mm still-camera field of view.

Barry,

Do you have trouble with the Nikon lens not locking in place as JohnT is talking about? I have heard that the Canon lens do not lock in place, is this true?

barry.

im extremely curious to see the light loss compared to my ifocusHQ.

how has light loss been with the letus flip enhanced. ( I thought letus FE was first editing, not flip enhanced lol )

yeah the only concern of mine is the light loss from the adapter. So much glass that the light has to pass through to get to the ccd's

if you feel like being a sweetheart anytime soon, i would love t osee some stills of the dvx versus the letus flipped enhanced.

;) thanks!

How can you tell what mount the Canon lens uses? I have someone that is going to give me a Canon 40mm f1.7 len but I don't know what mount it has.

I believe that it is the lens off of this camera...

The lens on the Canonette is for use on a coupled rangefinder camera body. That is the wrong type of lens. The FD lenses were used on SLR bodies.

You need any Canon FD lens. The FD lens mounts came in a few different styles and were used on a wide assortment of lenses, some of which are stellar, while others are mediocre.

Here's where to see some. Note the lens designations all start with "FD", i.e. "FD 50mm f/1.2 S.S.C.ASPHERICAL"

Light loss is around 1.5 stops for the adapter, more if your lenses are slower. My lenses are quite slow (1.8 is the fastest) so I experience about two stops of light loss.

im actually more curious to know what that actually does in a low lit room ( even though when shooting features, lights will be used)

but just practical applications, i.e. shooting at a family dinner, what does a dimly lit room look like through the adapter, 24p, lets say 1/48th or 1/60th shutter. wide open.

does anyone have any experience with the Letus35A? I'm getting it for x-mas and just want to make sure it'll be worth it. It's only like 400$, which is 300$ less tha the flip, which i DONT care about (flipping in post is easy enough for me)

I'm going to opt for the non-flipped version and save the dough. I prefer to frame using dv-rack and a laptop. My projects consist of mostly static shots.

For any moving handheld shots, my friend will be holding the laptop and running with me guerilla style. :)

Vibration and Sound

Vibration and Sound

Hello Mr. Green,

I wanted to ask if you or anyone who has used this unit can comment on the level of sound from the vibration. Does it pick up on the on board mics? If in a room would a sound mixer hear it? Does it show up on DX tracks? Thanks for all the research and responsiveness.

Sincerely,
Salvador Luna

2 quick questions (sorry for the repeat post). Can you hear the vibration from the unit in the mics? Can you put a PL mount onto this unit (i.e. could you buy the M2 PL adapter and fix it to this unit)? Thanks for all the help!

I just registered here to say that I'm quite curious about Barry's review. I want to buy a lens adapter this very year and can't make a decision between the M2, Brevis, and Letus35 Flip Enhanced for my HVX.

Sure it's really a big advantage to not need to flip the picture with the Letus. But what bothers me that you lose 2 stops. Man, that's much. I know even the expensive movietube loses 2 stops. You can forget filming in rooms without extra light I guess.

The Brevis doesn't have that much light loss. It beats the M2 here and in the vignetting competition (see Rick's test: http://gearbrain.blogspot.com/). On the other hand somehow the outdoor takes from the Brevis I don't like. M2 looks much better. But maybe Rick didn't give both adapters the same amount of care.

Shall I take the Brevis because of lesser light loss? Is M2 light loss also 2 stops or is it better than the Letus? Will the M2 vignetting be that extreme as seen in Rick's test?

If I make the wrong decision I should have bought the Letus because I only lose half of the money.

Hope Barry's review can help me here. This guy's word has some weight for me after reading his HVX book.

I can't speak for any of the other adapters, but on the Letus35 Flip Enhanced it is virtually silent.

I would have to see a Redrock and a Brevis to know how different they are. Calibrating these adapters seems to be confusing for people, and not to the Letus' credit, it showed up with no instructions whatsoever. Once properly set up (which only took all of five minutes) it's been brilliant, but yes two stops of light is a lot to lose. Anyone feel like lending/renting an M2 or a Brevis for a bit of comparison? :)

Barry,
I see on the Letus website that the Letus35FE offers 52mm or 72mm but the HVX is 82mm right. So, did you have to buy a seperate adapter ring?
