a few 24p/FCP questions

problem 1: ok, so im shooting 24p, and when I capture it it still has the same look viewing later on, but when i go to edit the footage i check the properties to match up with my sequence and it says the clip has a 29.97 frame rate, when I shoot 24p, doesnt that mean that im shooting 24 fps? ALSO, could my camera settings have something to do with it? (most of the time i do shoot with the shutter at 1/500 or 1/1000.)

problem 2: when editing with the 24p footage (even tho it says its 29.97) I try slowing the clip down and it still doesnt look great, quite skippy infact, if i can get the footage to work properly in Fincal Cut as 24fps are there any tricks to getting smoother clips when i slow them down? I know I probably can't get HVX smooth but I would like to get as smooth as i can.

Thanks

Did you shoot 24p or 24pA? If 24pA, use Noah's digitizing guide sticky in this section. You must remove the pulldown to go from 29.97 to 23.98.

If you shot 24p standard, it's more complicated; you can't automatically remove the pulldown. You have to do it with Cinema Tools. There are guides for doing that out there on the web.

24p footage is not so good for remapping time. The best results with the DVX will come by shooting 60i and slowing it down to 40% speed.

I had always been told to shoot 24p standard and not Advanced. should I be shooting in advanced?

and yea, If I know theres stuff I will be slowing down, I usually shoot just on F1 at 29.97, that seems to look pretty good slowed down. just hoped there might be something I can do with 24p so i could just keep it on 1 setting

If you're going to edit in 24p (and you should if you have 24p matierial), shoot 24pA, always.

It's amazing how much bad info is still out there.

Try reading Barry Green's DVX book it covers everything you'd want to know. Well worth the money. Find it on the home page for this site under the DVX shop section.

Yeah... I never shoot 24p (mode) anymore. Just gets in the way. In fact, I've eliminated it completely from my scene dial so I couldn't if I even tried.

Just gets in the way.

in the summer I am big into the wakeboard scene here in canada and some other filmers were the ones telling me to shoot 24p (not advance)
