A DIY Thing

I have a couple of these. Rack-mount slides. Aluminum. Ball-bearings between the sections to glide relatively smoothly.

Any idea what I can turn them into, camera equipment-wise?

They're just sitting there, aching to be turned into something usefull.

I'm thinking of cutting one shorter, using it as a camera base-plate atop a steadicamish thingie. Anything else?

Hmmmmm

Almost like a mini dolly of sorts for hard to reach places? Have to get a Plate on there but I can see this being some crazy tool in the bag.

Re: A DIY Thing

John's idea of a mini dolly is cool. Also, mount a tripod base that swivels so the camera can be panned during a dolly. I can imagine using one on a counter top or some other confined space.

Re: A DIY Thing

I have a mini dolly like the one being described here (fluid head, bearings, track sits on the TOP of a tripod) except mine has a 5ft long track. GREAT tool. You can do dolly shots as quickly as it would have taken you to set up a tripod. I can tell you from experience that 18inches its going to be tooo short to be useful...unless your doing macro work. At the same time using it as a steadicam balance plate it may be too big.

Yeah. I'd have to whacked off some, bring it down to 6 or 8 inches. Doable.

HAH! That's exactly what I thought.

Re: A DIY Thing

Mini dolly system is a professional track and dolly setup but on a smaller scale. The track is 5 ft long and 1ft wide. The dolly is about 1ft square with 8 wheels. Its set up to take either any standard threaded fluid head or a hi-hat configuration will let you use a 75mm-150mm bowl. Its a major time saver and letting you do perfect dolly shots with none of the hassle. I believe I saw a similar system posted here once before. I'll try and take a picture next time I use it.

O! O! Went to the recycling center today to dump some paper...and found this

in the miscellaneous dumpster.

No, not the cat! The draftsman thingie. Really happy about the articulated arm part. Ordered a stabilizer fromEVS the other day, and can easily work this up to give my arm a rest. Just gotta make a gimbal attachment...

I'm gonna have SO much fun when I get back from vacation. :D
