A DIY Challenge!.....................Anamorphic Lens Clamp

Hey everyone!
I've just recently purchased a Proskar 2x Anamorphic Adapter:
If you are not familiar with anamorphic adapters, they attach to a taking lens, then attach to a camera.

There are three competing products for sale right now, used for attaching the anamorphic adapter to the taking lens:

I want to put the DVXUser brains to work!
Anyone have some nice ideas for DIY Lens Clamps?

These have, typically, a 52mm or 54mm thread for attachment to the taking lens.
 
my diy solution was a set like this

Use tube #2 or #3 depending on how thick you like

Drill in three holes on the sides and then tap them to your screw size.

My tube section happened to be 60mm thread which mounts quite nicely on my lieca lenses but otherwise i need step down rings to mount it.

Cost about $10


I should also note that for my large 35mm projector anamorphic lens i used the same method but with a piece of 3" PVC coupling and a then im currently trying to figure a way to mount it to my rail system.

the backend of my proskar is about 40mm, so I might opt for a smaller tube.

That tube you have is listed as:
Dimensions: 2.48 in x 2.48 in x 2.76 in


What are the internal dimensions?
 
You know i dont know the internal dimensions but its pretty thin walls. They couldn't be more than 1/8th of an inch thick. They are very study however.

Keep in mind the OD of your anamorphic lens when you get started.

The last thing i want to do is find a way to get rubber tips on the thumb screws so as to not scratch the lens.
 
Hi Guys, Those adapters don’t look look very complex ( I don’t know anything about them). If someone could send me specifications I should be able to machine them
in my machine shop.

Scott that would be cool! I think you could probably sell a few here and there!

So my guess would be the following:

Male Thread sizes I've seen are typical taking lens thread sizes 52mm, 58mm. 60mm on one end.
Other end... the "anamorphic lens end" I think the interior diameter is 55mm-57mm.
It looks like the walls should be 1/4" or 3/8"...enough to hold a thread. I would assume a 1/4-20 tap.
From the look of the CNC'd clamps, the are only about 1" to 1 1/4" total height.

I am not sure if this would help....but here are the measurements of my Proskar!
I bet if you offered to build these for people @ custom sizes they would pay decent $$$$$. Since most of the other clamps are "one size fits all".

Also the "British Clamp" offers a matching colored "filter clamp" that is basically a larger clamp with female threads (65mm?) that are used to mount close up diopters. MOst of these anamorphic adapters wern't meant to hold filters, so they dont have threaded ends. Also most of these dont focus closer than 5 feet!
 
Basically it looks like a cylinder with the correct O.D. and threads pitch to
screw into your existing lens. The other end needs the correct I.D. to slip
the anamorphic lens into, then some way to lock the lens in ( looks like
they use 3 set screws). Does the depth of the adapter need to be a certain
length? Does this sound like what you are looking for?

Yeah thats about right. Its a glorified lens shade basically.

I think with the length you would want to attempt to get the back end of the anamorphic adapter as close to the front element of the taking lens as possible.
That is why the have that small "lip" at one end.

The length should be slightly longer than the distance from the back of the anamorphic adapter to the first "lip". So on my Proskar that would be aprox 28mm.
 
the red,blue colour adapters on the previous page are mine...
they are the best because they are made by an english car engineer and have been tailor made using my large collection of anamorphic lens.
i have 4 different sizes.simply cos i do not like overly bulky clamps.
the fit is like a glove...
as the other seller's say this is not rocket science.
the clamps from france, hong kong and the usa cost about 6 dollars in chinese parts...
one is a drilled extension tube the others bog standard lens hoods with 3 holes drilled....no need to machine anything unless you can find an engineer to work for less than 6 bucks : )

on the other hand my new ones needed a lot of care...

I dont think anyone would contest the quality of your clamps. They are well made and I also have read some wonderful reviews on them.
However, as with most of the DIY threads in this forum, we are searching for more affordable options we can build ourselves. :thumbsup:

a simple recipe...guaranteed no msg.
as per the ebay hong kong sellers clamp.
buy 1 $4 dollar 52mm metal lens hood off ebay.
buy a bag of screw bolts for a dollar
drill 3 holes evenly spaced around the hood..
screw bolts in.
your hood is thus transformed from a thin walled piece of low grade chinese metal into a custom super turbo clamp.
so simple a child could do it,but folks always supervise children when they use power tools : )

Hi Scott, were you ever able to machine your own Anamorphic Lens Clamps? I'm in the market for one that will take a 70mm Anamorphic back. Any good links for strong metal lens hood that could be converted?
 
Hey guys, what do you think of mine clamp?

Thread is easly attachable to 52mm step ring, so I need to test with my 80-200mm lens, as 58mm Helios is not very good with Moller 63...

I know is not perfect but cost in total about 7£... Btw is old post but maybe someone recently visited this thread
