A different way to make a DVD??

O.k. folks, I've got 5 days left to the Sundance deadline....

I still can not make a dvd from PPRO 1.5

The flic is long, over 2 hours, and I'm having too many problems to list. Hour after hour wasted on failed dvd attempts. I quit.

QUESTION:

Can I transfer the movie via fire wire to SonyHD or DV tape, and from there, transfer that to DVD?

Any picture loss doing this?

Any thoughts? There must be a production house in Los Angeles that can create a dvd using this method?

Heeeeelp!!

Darryl

Can you clarify the problems that you are having? I have Premier as well as Encore and don't usually have any issues. I also have a high end Scenarist (running on an SGI) system at the office that I have brought Premier projects into many times. If you get really stuck, I might be able to offer some assistance as I know the deadline is looming (just finished a short on Friday for submission).

List the issues clearly.

but... have you made a lossless DVavi of the whole program ?

If so ... there are many options available to you including using a Pro post house to encode and burn the DVD.

They would include:
1: Encode with a standalone encoder - MainConcept mpg standalone ( USD$50 for Prem USers) is so much faster than the plugin version that PremPro incorporates)

2: Use Encore or an alternate authoring app. for burning from Mpg (not avi). This is faster method by far.

3. Have a post house do either encode or burn or both from your Lossless DVavi.

4. Transfer to a DLT tape and take that to a post fcility.

IMHO:
If you are trying to encode and burn straight from the Project in a PremPro Timeline, I would suggest you are doing it about the slowest way possible. This way also means if you crash at any part of the process ( encode or burn), you have lost hours of time ( which you don't have it... would seem !)

Everytime I make a dvd, it's random that it works. I can burn a 10 minute dvd just fine.... 1/2 hour dvd sometimes..... never anything over an hour....

get random error messages, out of memory (sometimes) I downloaded the patch, and sometimes get the message.....

Assembling errors (sometimes) The problem is it takes toooo long to see if it is going to work.... I can't spare 3 hours of downtime waiting for another error message.

How about a dvd recorder? I found a Toshiba w/firewire inputs and 3/2 pull down progressive.... think that would work?

Toshiba RD-XS34 Looks like a plan?

KHMUSE: Thanks for the offer!

Shooter: make a dvavi copy? is the avi a true copy ? I thought it was compressed or looks "off"?
I just go to export... then click on avi? Sends one file to the desk top....
Then, I can take that file and use Encore to burn a quality dvd from there?

hit me back... thanks!!!

If you want to export a LOSSLESS avi from PremPro you must CHECK the 'Do Not Recompress' Box in one of the Export settings . By default it is set as UNCHECKED.
(If it is un-checked it is re-compressing the avi and you are losing quality)

As I said above - I think it is better and quicker to Encode the avi with a standalone Encoder. The one I mentioned (MAinConcept)is cheap and fast (almost realtime). This will show if you have any problems with the mpeg a hell of a lot quicker and maybe let you know where they are. If the Mpeg is ok, take it into Encore where this will be a faster process also because it doesnt need to encode the avi.

This stuff I am saying is based on my recent experiences ( good and bad) and so this is now the way I do it. I started off trying it your way and it was damn difficult to work out one of my flickering issues. (Turned out to be a wrong field issue in the mpeg). I was looking at the data rate on the burn to DVD.

BTW - I think Encore recommends using an encoded mpeg if possible before an avi.

How do I make an MPG? In the drop down menu for choices.... dvavi, quicktime, bmp, etc... but no mpg?

I saw the the check box for compression....

Do I really need to make an mpg? Can I just make the dvavi, and use encore to burn the dvd from that? Will it look o.k.? Do I have to encode it? (not sure how to do that, or what that is?)

Thankyou!

The point is that a DVD is a form of mpg in the final outcome anyway.

If you use Encore or PremPro to encode the avi it will be slower than other methods ( such as a standalone encoder) but you will get there enventually. Your two hour project will take a long time and hopefully you wont get an error on the way.

What I suggest is you encode to mpg first, then check it by playing it back ( note: checking it will take two hours). If it is cool, take it into Encore and burn it ( then check it - another two hours obviously)

PremPro can encode to mpg if you dont want the faster standalone version of MainConcept Encoder. It is not a Movie Export , it is a Media Export. (many options wil reveal themselves)

Whatever, make your DVavi (Lossless) 1st.....and of course that will take at least two hours.

The elemental stream would be a .m2v for the video portion and a .wav for the audio portion. In Premier, this is accomplished by using the "Adobe Media Encoder" option under "Export". After that point, you will be presented with a number of presets and lots of options. Most of the presets are not very good, but to suggest a "custom" one, I would need more information on the project. If you want to PM me, I might be able to get you going on this. The work flow between Premier and Encore can be improved if you take a few intermediate steps and if done correctly, can really work out well.
