A choice between a better shotgun mic or better lavs...

All,

We're gearing up for a new project and just received a grant for some more equipment. We have around $1200 left in the budget.

I want to upgrade my sound gear but can't decide between spending the cash on two Sennheiser G2 sets with and VT500 lavs OR splurging on a new shotgun mic (I am currently using a Sennheiser ME-66 and have been pleased).

Some facts might help:

I'm pretty much a one man shop and need a shotgun that works well when camera mounted.

I'll need lavs at some point but can probably rent one.

The documentary will probably be shot mostly indoors and has a main character and his parents.

Look forward to hearing what you guys think.

Upgrade your shotgun. First priority is alway get the best sound possible wired. Then add wireless. Now, if you had said you had a 4073a, or above, I might feel a bit differently, but I am one of those that believe that the only reason Sennheiser released the ME66 was to rip off unsuspecting newbies. :-) In your price range, look at a Sanken CS3E or get a used Sennheiser 416 and then you may still have enough budget for a G2 and mic (though get the Countryman EMW before the VT.)

Just my $.02.

Phil
