Hi guys. I just ordered my DVX100A today. I was wondering if you could recommend a website to buy a tripod for $100 to $300 for it. I know that's not much, but I'm just starting out and my funds are a bit limited for the time being. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here are a few suggestions ranging from $500 to $850 all which have half bowl as opposed to a column. A little more then you are budgeting for, but I would advise investing in a good support system.

Like you, I bought an expensive camera and then went for a cheap tripod. That lasted about six weeks. You'll quickly find that the cheap tripod cannot match the quality of visual image the camera can deliver. If you're going to do a lot of hand held work and then just stick the camera on a tripod and not pan or anything, then a cheapie tripod might be fine. But soon as you start panning/tilting/tracking on a tripod, or if you're outside and it's windy, you'll notice the cheap tripod shakes and wobbles. You can't even do rack focusing (at least I couldn't) without getting camera shake. I thought it was my bad technique. Or the camera's limitations (the focus ring is a bit tricky). But the reality was, it was the tripod. So I faced the facts. I had to buy one more thing...a good tripod. About $550 for the lowest end fluid head Manfrotto I could find (the Manfrotto 501). I should have saved the $100 I paid for the cheap one and put it toward the Manfrotto. Just a cautionary tale.

A good tripod really makes a big difference. In the humble words of Ken Stone, "Don't get cheap on the weakest link or everything will look like crap." Actually, I don't think Ken said it that way. But he meant to.

I had actually bought a decent tripod in the 60-70 pound range and it broke straight out of the box (luckily the camera was not attached)
for some lighter work I use a tripod I bought at Best Buy for around the same amount its pretty generic, but has two spirt levels, pretty smooth operation and tides me over when money for a manfrotto isn't present..

Such a thing as tripod on wheels?

Such a thing as tripod on wheels?

What would be the cheapest tripod that has a fluid head, can easilly be removed and attatched, and can carry the weight of a DVX + 35mm adapter (the heavy ones with rotating glass) + mattebox + follow focus + support rods/plate + shotgun mic + firestore + whatever the hell else you're "supposed" to add to the camera?

Safarijoe, do you know what's the deal with that tripod? I have been eyeballing it a little for myself, but I don't get that pneumatic post gizmo.

The D&S ones are bad. Do a search and you will see that they break and aren't worth it.

I tried to buy a tripod when I bought my DVX last week. The person who sold me the camera said that he would not sell me any of the D&S they had on sale because everybody that buys them brings them back.

It does seem strange but I bought one and it works ok although I'd buy one without the gizmo if I was going to do it again. Overall though, I have no complaints and the price is definately right.:kali:

what do you think about using a high-quality light-weight tripod? im getting the Bogen 503 head with the 3445CF sticks...the whole thing will weigh about 8lbs ot so after the adapter...think thats too light? i wanted to go superllight for snowboarding, and i figured maybe i end up getting some heavier legs for backup...whatcha think?
