Skywalker
Since war movies seem to be so popular here, I thought I'd throw in this one. It's a russian movie, that is coming out on September 29th. Looks like it's the biggest thing this year - the amount of advertising is really insane and judging by what I've seen and heard they spent a fortune to make it. 200+ soldiers on the set 24/7, 50 tanks, bunch of helicopters etc. Plus, tons of newest equipment (well, at least according to the director) was used, like HD recorders for playback, that Scott was the first to use on KoH, some uber viewfinder, one out of 3 availabe, with the other being used on MI:3 atm and such...
The movie is based on the book of the same name, I believe, and tells the story of a few guys who went to army in the mid 80s and ended up in Afganistan (Russian Vietnam, for those who don't know...). It's centered around one huge battle, that is rumoured to had Ben Laden participating besides other things.
Director is a very fine actor, popular tv host and an all-around nice guy, but 9C is his directorial debut. He is also a son of Sergei Bondarchuk, director of the 1968 War and Piece, Oscar winner, most expensive film to date ($540 mil adjusted for inflation) and at 500 min longest commercially released movie ever.
Personally, I'm not sure what to think of this movie yet. It might be a Black Hawk Down rip-off, but people who have seen it are saying it's a modern day Apocalypse Now, so I'll hold my judgement till I see it myself. Only started this thread, because I caught a small doc about making 9th Company on TV and thought I'd shed some light onto it here.
Anyway, here are the trailers, so judge for yourself:
Trailer 1 - I like the mood of this one better, although IMO it reminds BHD very much...
Trailer 2 - this one is longer and has a lot more action footage, but I almost hate it now, because I must have seen it 10 times in the theaters alone in the past 3 weeks...
(They are in russian, though, so only good enough to impress visually
I guess I could make subtitles, if someone was interested, so just ask)
