960 x 720 HVX footage

Just a quick question, how do NLE's deal with the 960 x 720 image size of 720P footage out of the HVX? I am about to start a major project where I have an equal amount of footage shot with a HVX202 and a JVC HD101 all in 720P.

I want to edit on a DVC PRO HD 720P timeline but am unsure about how NLE's deal with the different frame sizes of the two cameras (1280 x 720 and 960 x 720). Is the NLE up rezzing the 960 x 720 to the full 1280 x 720 spec or am I down rezzing the ProHD 1280 x 720 to the 960 x 720 spec? I'm using Edius Broadcast BTW.

If you are using EDIUS Broadcast, there is nothing to worry about. Just put them on whatever project settings timeline you want to edit on and EDIUS will do whatever it does to make it work.

If you have the p2 card space, you might consider shooting 1080 with the HVX as the frame size is 1280x1080 and that will give you the full 1280x720 frame size and will probably match up bbetter with your native 1280x720 cam. It's also a cleaner picture out of the HVX.

I can't get into the technicals of what EDIUS does, b/c I don't know. I just know it works in realtime and without a hiccup :)

I'm using a DVC PRO HD 720P preset for the project, was just curious what it would do to the ProHD 720P footage from the JVC on the same time line (crop etc)?

I avoided shooting in 1080 because I did not have the P2 space especially if I wanted progessive footage, so it seemed simpler to shoot in 720PN.

*shouldn't* hurt the JVC footy at all, but I don't know... sorry. THoff or Bhiga would probably be able to answer this for you.

If you could, I have asked a similar thing on the Canopus forum but no answer yet.
I am curious how they plump out the 960 x 720 to 1280 x 720, is it a square pixel thing like 16x9 images are?

Yup, it's an anamorphic-type sub-sampling. There's some sophisticated trickery involved so it's not just a "straight" squash, but the end result is that you'll be stretching 960x720 to 1280x720.

- 960 x 720 is res of P2 DVCPRO HD, It'll be no problem if you use edius broadcast or Edius 4.5x
- In this case, in Edius 4.5, You set the project setting to 1280 x 720 then put them all (960 x 720 and 1280 x 720) to the timeline. It'll be ok !!!
- Or the other way (still in Edius 4.5x), you set the project to 1280 x 720 and put the 960 x 720 to the timeline and export to HDV footage 720p, so that it lt will be the same JVC 1280 x 720 footage (square pixel) but it will be no longer DVCPRO HD codec anymore.
 
It's still DVCPRO HD codec from the file (EDIUS doesn't recompress until you export to file or tape), but of course since the original resolution is different you might see a difference in the image qualities.
 
What can you do with premiere or After effects for 960x720 footage? Is there a way to get 1280x720 out of it? I am going to the internet with it (youtube, etc)
