Hi I'm making a video and there needs to be 9 equal sized video squares in the same frame. We shot all the video in 4:3 but how do I make sure all the squares are in the right spot? I can eyeball it but if anyone has done this or they know a better way to do it...please let me know. Thanks!!!

Here's a pic.

Simple math.

Each image should break at 240 pixels in from the left. And 160 pixels down.

Assuming you shot at 720 by 480.

In motion, would you just create nine drop zones, and size them appropriately? Just curious about the fastest method to do this.

there IS a filter you can drop onto your clip if you want each image to be the same.. but if you want them different.. i think you gotta do the math and resize each frame...

I'm interested in the fastest way also. C'mon motion guys, how would you do it??
Well, I just tired it out with 9 NTSC DV clips 4:3. I scaled each one to 33.3% and placed them where I wanted. It worked fine and just took a couple of minutes.

What's even slicker -- if you want to re-use this effect in the future...

Go into Motion, create a drop zone, and re size it down to 33.3%. Copy & paste it twice, so you make a row of three. Then select all three drop zones, and move them down/up to make the next row. After you've repeated a third time for the last row, go to the file menu and save as a template. You'll be asked to create a new theme, and then a name for your template.

Then, in FCP, you can re-use it over and over as a master template. (see the screencaps). In an ideal world, you'd make the drop zones labeled from 1 to 9, and 33.3333333%, but I was in a hurry. :)
