9/11: The Movie

My point was far more general than what I think you're talking about, John-

I personally just feel that considering very few americans are multi-millionaires, the lifestyle of those that are is probably quite removed from what I would consider reflective of the police officers that are the focus of this film.

I tend to view the usual output of the major studios as more often than not entertainment for the sake of entertainment, and inherently commercial to a point that it's really hard to rely on them for an even remotely realistic portrayal of actual events. That's fine (and often preferrable) for the most part, but when it comes to something like this, I just worry that those involved may lack the perspective necessary to create something socially meaningful, and may inadvertantly discredit the emotion involved by supplementing it with "hollywood emotion" (i.e. manipulative use of gimmicky, time-tested storytelling techniques).

Admittedly though I am a pretty big cynic when it comes to these things, so take that for what you will. As for who I'd prefer, that's an extremely tough call. Strangely the first that come to mind are actually both English- Danny Boyle and Paul Greengrass. But I know that would never fly.

I dig it and thanks for claryifying. I think Boyle is an interesting choice as well; that could work. I thought of some alternatives and Peter Weir came to mind.

I totally see your point with "hollywood emotion" (i.e. manipulative use of gimmicky, time-tested storytelling techniques)". Well put.

Stone is a VERY political man. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a conspiracy theory sub-plot that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. It could get ugly. With the way Kingdom of Heaven was handled I would rather see Ridley Scott handle 9/11.

I have a conspiracy theory about 9/11!

That plane that crashed in Pennsylivania, United Airlines Flight 93, was shot down by a US fighter.

When it first happened, just minutes afterwards, the BBC broadcasted an interview with two farmer eyewitnesses. They BOTH said the plane was on fire before it hit the ground.

I have never heard anything about that since.

Donald Rumsfeld once slipped up and referred to the flight as being "shot down" too!

Back to the film:

It is an interesting idea to use a British director, but I am not sure if they would fully understand the American feeling. Stone is an interesting choice IMO, as he likes to say/film what he thinks.

I think it would be interesting to get an outsider to do this film. Stone will be political, and just about every American has a biased view of the event. An outsider might bring a different perspective. The last thing I really want to see is a JFK or Michael Bay rendering of 911. I don't think we'll get a better understanding of the event through film. We'll get an emotional account, but I don't think it will yield any new insights.

Around 1 per 125.

Y'know...that sounds like few, but it really is a shitload, all things considered.

Yeah I actually read that there are more millionaires today than there have ever been; then again being a millionaire doesnt have the same brevity it once had. One site has the number at:

6,850,000 Millionaires and a US POPULATION of 296,589,901

I've got serious doubts and reservations about the project on a global level.

Is this intended as an expose or a War of the Worlds biopic on an everyman like a heroic firefighter? If it's the later, then I'd say it sounds more like Michael Bay fodder. Note that Pearl Harbor was not Tora! Tora! Tora! - it was a love story wrapped loosely around two real pilots who managed to get their planes off the ground during the seige.

Really, it seems a little early for this project. There is no third act to this piece - the madman behind 9/11 is still orchestrating mayhem and spreading fear around the world. If the story ends with Cage under a crumbled tower, well... then I guess that is what Hollywood thinks people want to see [again]?

If it's an expose piece ala JFK, then I don't have a problem with Stone directing, but who is Nick Cage going to play - W? "A girl got a pet goat. But the goat did some things..."

Theoretically, if I don't spend any money between now and my retirement, I'll have a million.

Like that's going to happen.

Now you see? That's cool.

Stone ~

"It's about people standing together and overcoming the problem. It's a no-nonsense, austere, vérité document of what they went through in those 24 hours, a procedural if you like, and it should be shot like that."

Is it too early? I think this is a great story for 'everyman people'; firefighters, cops, victims......

I'll say what I said on Page 1. "I look forward to this."

And what's with this 'Conspiracy Theory' Bullshit anyway? These are the comment's I have read in this thread thus far:

"If it has Stone at the helm...yes. I think a more responsible director would be needed. "

"I got a bad feeling about this one..."

"Quit standing up for shitty ideas"

"Stone is a nut and we need a more even sensibilities to direct such a movie."

"Stone is a VERY political man. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a conspiracy theory sub-plot that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. It could get ugly. "Stone will be political"

Let's look at the body of work from Mr. Stone

Alexander - Conquering 90% of the known world by the age of 25, Alexander the Great led his armies through 22,000 miles of sieges and conquests in just eight years.

Any Given Sunday - Wideley considered a very realistic portrayal of the Professional Football

* Nixon - The story of Richard M. Nixon, former president of the United States
...whose presidency ended in disgrace.

Natural Born Killers - The misadventures of Mickey and Mallory as glorified by the media

Heaven & Earth - The final movie in Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy follows the true story of a Vietnamese village girl who survives a life of suffering and hardship.

* JFK - Details the actions of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, who
...takes it upon himself to investigate the assassination of President John F.
...Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, in 1963. I hate to break it to you fellas but THE
...CONSPIRACY EXISTED LONG BEFORE STONE MADE THIS FILM.

The Doors - Oliver Stone's homage to 60's rock group The Doors and Morrison

Born on the Fourth of July - The biography of Ron Kovic. Paralyzed in the Vietnam war, he becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he fought for.

Talk Radio - About an acerbic radio talk show; based on the Stage Play.

Wall Street - A Wall Street stockbroker meets Gordon Gekko, who takes the youth under his wing and explains his philosophy that "Greed is Good". something which is at odds with his estranged father and his blue-collared upbringing

Platoon - A gritty and emotional look at the lives of a platoon of American soldiers.

Salvador - A journalist, down on his luck in the US, drives to El Salvador to chronicle the events of the 1980 military dictatorship

Seems to me that his one film JFK is the culprit of all this nonsense (Surely it isn't the Nixon film?). Again, the conspiracy theory was there loooooooonnnnnnnggggggggggggg before the film was. So other than this minor detail; what's with all of the comment's? Seem's the conspiracy lies on the other side of the fence.

Oliver Stone tackles some of the more interesting and ballsy subject matter's in Hollywood IMO. So what's all the complainin' and 'Ooohhhhhhhh Stone is going to have a story of Aliens in it...................................'

You guy's are believing the hype.
