8K RED Epic-W Unboxing!

For cinematographers, 8K resolution offers more than just incredible detail. It delivers countless possibilities for reframing, VFX (visual effects), motion stabilization, supersampling footage, and more. More resolution boils down to the ability to do more with your footage in production—all without having to reshoot.

i am a big fan of more resolution for all obvious reasons, many of which are mentioned above, but this reminds me a little bit about companies trying to cram 20 pix cameras into phones....a small sensor means small pixels and small pixels just don't looks so good IMO...RED definitely (finally) got the low light performance worked out....but in all the samples out there so far the idea of punching in to 8K is a stretch to me....the sample of downtown LA (in the official RED clip?) comes to mind...it just does not look good at all....i think this is a great 4K (with extra room) camera and the mark toia video looks really great, color, DR, noise...

I've only shot with a RED camera three times but for some reason, I hate everything about shooting with RED cameras. Not saying they are bad or anything like that, they are obviously on top of their game technically. But I hate the shoebox-like ergonomics, nomenclature, workflow, stupid skull logos, the names of every camera. It's like they are being marketed only to Michael Bay and Bro/Frat Boy DPs or something? Can't argue with success and I've seen lots of good stuff shot by them but given a rental budget, I will always go for an Arri, high end Sony or Panasonic over a RED. For those who love them, rock on, but I will never be amongst them.

Im really excited to try out these 8K options for a 4K workflow. I can see them being great for some applications I need which we've used Dragons for in the past with mixed results. These new sensors look like they're going to solve those.

I've seen TVc's aired in 1080 so during production they've forgone shooting the MCU, instead opting to shoot a wide and then push in post with some very shonky results so that reframing argument is a little lost on me. Im more interested in shooting 8k for the hight detail, less noise, 4K on green screen.

To me increasing the sensor resolution by 4x is always about bypassing the limitations of a bayer sensor and getting ultra clean 1/4 size material. So really to me this is the first RED 4k camera that is truly 4k of natural no farting around with detail. In much the same way I consider 4k cameras today to be really darn good 2k cameras.

Tomas, exactly. 4K cameras are for 2K deliverables just as 8K cameras are for 4K deliverables. It's about RESOLVABLE resolution. For us though, we're sticking with Ravens and Scarlet-Ws for awhile purely for memory reasons. In order to get a S35 FOV on a helium you MUST shoot at 8K since since dropping the resolution crops the sensor and changes the FOV and DOF. Shooting 5K S35 for the same FOV on Dragon is far more practical for many.
