8GB Compact Flash . . . Wondering

That's a lot of space . . . almost as much as a DVD-10.

I can't help but wonder, other than the cost factor (which probably wouldn't be a factor for that long), why flash memory might not be used in favor of DVD, perhaps even replacing it?

Just wondering aloud.

I doubt the consumer base would be likely to adopt a completely new format and abandon their trusty dvd players (which some people STILL don't have). Even if the medium is far superior, consumers are fickle, and really don't care.

That's probably one reason China is still gung-ho over VCD's instead of DVD's... or the SACD craze hasn't taken off here... sure it's much better, but to joe blow down at best buy getting a new player, he won't care. His beloved "Nascar greatest hits" only comes on DVD... so he's not going to switch...

Panasonic is clearly going in that direction with the new P2 solid-state memory system for cameras. Ultimately, I think all digital content will be delivered by broadband and then beamed to the viewing/listening/reading device of your choice.

I dunno. People like the permanence of buying something once, putting on the shelf, and being done with it But who knows? Predicting future trends is age-old folly and almost always wrong.

I think movies people buy will be burned into their brain-chip (coming 2005) and then replayed on command through their retina-projector. :)

I think compact flash is WAY to slow for video. Also CF is very prone to failure, not to mention the cost. Just my 2¢
