I guess this is the sweet spot for lenses? Because for me it's been the hardest of lenses to get ahold on. So I'd like to know what's so great besides that its a fast clean lens, and that it work very well in almost every lighting situation. Or so I have read. Can I get a reason why they are the most expensive lenses out of the primes. I was lucky when I got this one, It's a 85mm canon fd 1:1:2 and i got it for relatively cheap, people were over looking it because it came with a camera and other lenses on ebay.

Just a general fondness for that focal length. It's quite aesthetically pleasing. Also it can work as a longer lens for closeups without being too long, like a 135mm. That's my assumption.

85mm is great for portraits and CUs on Interviews - 50mm you need to move the camera in too close for comfort, 105mm or 135mm you have to move the camera out too far.

As a telephoto lens, it also compresses the perspective a little, forgiving big noses...

The longer lenses compress the perspective even more and some prefer the 105mm to 85mm. I personally often use 85mm for CUs, sometimes slightly longer. When you go 200mm the perspective is perhaps a tad bit too unnatural already and the light loss is more with longer lenses.

Tim naylor had alot of good things to say about the 80- 200mm nikon. how do others like the look and sharpness of this lens over the 85mm 1.4?

I dont have the 1.4 but testing the 80-200 against my 85 f2. and mamiya 80 f1.9 i discovered that the 85mm has a wider fov than the 80-200 @ 80mm, but the mamiya 80mm has the widest.

The 80-200 has better contrast IMO against the 85.

This was done in a controlled tests using several lenses including 105mm f2.8 nikon, 150mm f3.5 mamiya and the camera an HD200 with the stock fujinon at a constant f4 setting, shutter at 24 with a preset whitebalance.
