$8000 USD to play with! SUGGESTIONS!

Re: $8000 USD to play with! SUGGESTIONS!

yeah.. my original recommendation didn't apply to lighting as he didn't mention it so I assumed he had that in the bag. Rush is definitely right though.. lighting is critical. Fluros are fantastic, but expensive as hell for your budget and I don't know if it would be the best thing to jump into.. you may be better off taking Rush's Arri advice and buy 4 or 5 different powered Arri Fresnel's, and IMHO, just as important is scrims, c stands, barn doors, flags and gels.  With some CTB you can change the light to daylight or keep it incandescent, and scrims and such. that way for around $3000 you have a total light package instead of just a couple fluorescents.

Nothing beats a Kino for closeup talent work, but in my experience we use the incadencts more than kinos.  Maybe if you could get just a double 2'  just to have it it may be better for your budget.

Re: $8000 USD to play with! SUGGESTIONS!

Thanks for all of your recommendations everyone!

Great help.

I think after reading everything that I want to just purchase all the camera stuff possible with my $8000 USD budget and then rent the lighting equipment. For a drama project which is more dialogue driven, what type of lighting system would you recommend...the kino, hmi, etc? I have never rented lighting equipment before. How much should I expect to pay per day to rent the proper lighting equipment?

Rush, Do you have any demo videos of stuff you have done with the jib, dolly, and varizoom remote head? That sounds like a crazy setup! I'd love to see the results. How much does the basic functionable varizoom remote head cost? I believe it was close to $3500 USD? I'd love to have that but it's probably way out of my budget.

How did you find the $700 straight indie dolly? I was on ZGC today and I also emailed them for a discount and they are offering the straight track for $779 USD off the retail price of $799 USD. I'm thinking about buying both the straight and curved indie dolly sets. Can I just change the dolly wheels from the straight track set to swivel wheels so that I can use the dolly on the curved tracks as well?

So I should buy a 503 and a 516 head? Does the 516 head really make it that hard to use with camera load only? I guess the 503 isn't enough to support a jib + camera + ~30lb weights? Are these good tripod/head combos:

Re: $8000 USD to play with! SUGGESTIONS!

yeah, that is what I figured you would do. You should contact Palladin in Burnaby, they are excellent and can give you a good price...

as for the tripods.. I have seen people put XL1's with full mounts and jibs and weights on a 501... I mean its not recommended but it will work.

Re: $8000 USD to play with! SUGGESTIONS!

Regarding lighting go out to William F. Whites at the North Shore Studios(probably called something else now). They are really helpful guys and will show you all the options and ball park cost.

Re: $8000 USD to play with! SUGGESTIONS!

Whites is good.. but they are terribly expensive.

congrads norm, if you are looking for an affordable dolly that has multiple indoor and outdoor uses take a look at the vfgadets.com scooter shooter. this is quite unique and after using a few times i am hooked. we took a chance on it and have been sooo impressed. i am also using the cavision matte and follow focus, great for the price at almost half the 16x9 product. i really don't see twice the product for the price, but some only want a name. i agree with the other posts that glass and film movement will be the impression you would want to leave with this guy.

Owen--

The really sad part is how thieves broke into Norm's pad and stole all his equipment last fall. :(

I was hoping you weren't serious -- but alas -- you are. What a nightmare. :(

Woah!

Woah!

This was a very old thread...why did it pop back up?
Yeah, sad...everything was stolen. :(

Anyway, that's the past...luckily I've moved on!
