80 min. mini dv cassettes-AY-DVM83MQ/Anton Bauer

Does anyone know if you are able to use 80 minute (SP) cassettes in the dvx100a? I was reading the camera manual and it says not to use 80 min cassettes. Why? If this is true, how do you handle an event that is longer than 60 minutes without a break? Do you have to use 2 cameras? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone have experience with the QR-DVX100 anton bauer battery pack.

Thanks,

Guy

Never tried it, but as far as I know you shouldn't use 80-minute tapes because they're not as strong, so they won't last as long.

Do not use 80 min cassettes. Read the manual p 23 DVX100AP and p 22 DVX100AE

PHD,

I know the manual says no 80min...read me note from above. My question was why? Do you know why?

Thanks John. I was still curious though, do you know why panasonic says not to use the 80 minute length?

Thanks.

Re: 80 min. mini dv cassettes-AY-DVM83MQ/Anton Bau

maby tape is to thin for deck in the camera and maby has antother magnetic quality

Re: 80 min. mini dv cassettes-AY-DVM83MQ/Anton Bau

magnetic density is the same, but the tape is much thinner, and because of this it can flake and break which, as you can imagine, is not good.

Hmmm...two cameras... You can firewire a second camera to the first, right? And it will pick up where the first tape runs out? I think that's what I read.

I wonder if it even has to be a DVX for #2.

Just musing.

Re: 80 min. mini dv cassettes-AY-DVM83MQ/Anton Bau

doesnt need to be a dvx, it can be any firewire capture device, even a Quickstream HD. They actually made a little deck for the dvx100 for awhile that looked just like the tape part of the DVX.

Anyways, you can always shoot LP...

Thanks for everyones replies....so my next question is why does panasonic make an 80 min tape in the first place if it is really not reccommended?

Thanks,

Guy

Con-sumers. People not looking for quality...People wanting 80 minutes straight of their wife giving birth.

Re: 80 min. mini dv cassettes-AY-DVM83MQ/Anton Bau

Thanks Phil,

Another question...is their any advantage to using mini-DVCAM tapes instead of mini-dv in the dvx and if you are going to record a master post-edit to like a dsr-11, should you use dvcam tapes for that?

Thanks,

Guy

Re: 80 min. mini dv cassettes-AY-DVM83MQ/Anton Bau

Very interesting, let us now your experiens of 80 min tape

I've used 'em on 4-5 occasions where I really needed a continuous shot over an hour... never had any problems, but I tend to shoot once, capture once, and never use the tape again. I don't know if there are longevity issues woth more extensive tape use.... but I always try to find a way to schedule a tape change if possible.

For extreme cases... buy a digital-8 camera and some of Sony's 90-minute digital-8 tapes, and run firewire into that. Digital-8 is a much more reliable tape format...

Just to let you all know, I spoke with Rush (at EVS) on Thursday, and he told me Panasonic has discontinued making these tapes, and that the new "equivalent" tape will run over $10.00 a piece.
He did say that he had about 2000 tapes in backstock, but that they'ed probably all go pretty soon.

seriously, anyone want to go in on making a bulk purchase?...
