8 vs 10-bit image processing (FCP)

Given that my DVX100B uses 12-bit image processing, is there a noticeable difference between FC Express (8-bit) and FCP 5 (10-bit) image quality?

Unfortunatley there don't seem to be any FCP buffs able to answer a lot of the more technical questions. Anyone know of another FCP forum?

Your dvx's processing circuits use 12-bit, but still only records to 4:1:1 miniDV (not a 12-bit image). Bringing native miniDV footage into either system won't give you any difference.

it is always better to bring in footage to a noncompressed codec into your computer.
you shoot mini dv in camera it dose a compresstion 5:1 now depending on what codec you use to capture the footage it will also put a compresstion on it. So if you bring it in dv or to a dv sequence you are putting another 5:1 compesstion on it. So what i do depending on the project is do an online offline situation. I do my offline with the dv compresstion and I do my main edit. Then I do an online 10bit uncompressed and do my effects, CC, and titles. That is how I find to work the best and get the best quilty out of the footage. Now with the hvx that is a whole nother animal. I hope this makes sence to you since it is so late. and I am half asleep.

I didn't think there was a way to get the uncompressed data out of the DVX100B (eg SD-SDI port etc)?

no you are not getting uncompressed data from the camera, it is still compressed 5:1 dv. You are just capturing using an uncompressed 10bit codec so you are not adding another layer of compresstion. you are getting the rawest footage from the camera with no other compresstion. the only time you will put another layer of compresstion is at the end for your final out. That way there is no image or lose of quilty. you work from the best down.

Using Apple's DV Quicktime will give you minimal compression, if any at all. I was going to capture some footage the other day in the Animation codec and the size was huge! Plus I had to render it down before I can view it in the timeline, so using RT Extreme was useless.

I would suggest capture at DV Quicktime into FCP and just minimize rendering afterwards until your final export to Compressor.

Capturing DV footage through firewire does not add another layer of 5:1 compression.
It is only when editing, doing effects, etc.... that the footage will wind up being 'recompressed' if you go back out to DV. Which is obviously why you want to keep the number of renders you perform to a minimum.

But, you can make as many firewire dubs as you want.
The last should still look exactly the same as the first.
