8 point garbage Matte

A short time ago someone posted something on here about needing more than 8 points for a garbage matte.

I edited something last night where 8 points wasn't doing the trick so I added another 8 points! So now I have 16 points to play with and the end result isn't perfect, it however allowed me to shave away more of the background of the image than the original 8 points. As soon as I learn how to use After Effects, I will use that next time.

I have a singer on stage performing. I then used 2 Eight point garbage mattes to remove the background as much as I could then keyed her singing over a totally different background and it worked but like I said I need to play around with it more to get really tweaked! I will try to post some grabs when I am done.

I am confused. I've never used FCP for compositing, nor would I ever recommend it. In AE or Shake or any other program, any rotoshape or alpha channel can be drawn and used as a garbage matte. It doesn't matter if there are 4 points or 4000 points (though that would be a waste). The idea of garbage mattes is just to have a shape that removes unwanted material. You have to do what it takes to get rid of that material.

Did you shoot on a green screen? You say "keyed" her singing, so that implies yes. If you did, and you shot DV, then what you really need is a plug-in or something that will help smooth out the 4:1:1 color compression, otherwise when you key her out, you'll get jagged lines all around. It's not pefect with DV, never is.

Or are you talking about rotoscoping? Did you literally cut her out completely and place her on a different background, without keying out a green or blue screen?

Odds are with DV, to really make it work you'll have to do some rotoscoping work, which is tedious and hard, but really helps fight the 4:1:1 issue.

Yea I used the word "keyed" as a figure of speech. I didnt shoot her against a green screen. However it is an effect that I am seeing more and more of in various TV shows where its obvious they didnt shoot against a green screen and they completey took out the background and replaced it with something else. I just saw this done on an episode of CRIBS on MTV.
