8 bit vs 10 bit rendering?

Using Canon HDSLR footage is there any advantage for me to render any effects in 10 bit or should I just keep it at 8bit?

Thank you

Well, you SHOULD be converting it to ProRes, which is 10-bit. And edting in a ProRes timeline...which is 10-bit. You SHOULD NOT be editing the H.264 files that the camera produces...

I have a workflow tutorial on this: http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1

Thank you for the link and post. I convert the files to Pro Res and then drop it in the timeline. When I choose to render in 10 bit it takes longer compared to 8 bit. Also on a older computer I had I use to render in 8 bit because certain effects could not be done in 10 bit.

So I understand Pro Res is 10 bit, but what will happen or happens when I render in 8 bit? All I noticed was that the effects are less vibrant compared to 10 bit, but to me that's not really a bad thing.

So if you can share your expertise with what exactly happens if I render my graphics in 8 bit but work with 10 bit footage timeline

thank you

Is there a big differenece in render time?

On my current machine I would say yes. If I color correct 4 -5 different clips it might take my current iMac about 1-2 minutes to render in 8 bit , if I set it at 10 bit it takes about 3 minutes. So while not drastically longer that extra minute on top of the 1-2 is something I do not like dealing with.

So I choose to render everything in 8 bit and it allows me to work faster.
