8-bit rendering in FCP?

I'm a teenage filmmaker, and I'm going to be switching editors shortly after my current project (probably not for a few months). I'm trying to decide whether to go for the FCP Studio or the Adobe Production Premium.

I've researched them both pretty heavily, and neither one looks very significantly better for my personal situation. They each have little strengths and weaknesses, but neither one stands out significantly.

In the DV Rebel's Guide, Stu Maschwitz says that you should NEVER render out of your editor - he tells you to do all your color correction and effects in After Effects because AE can render in 16-bit instead of 8-bit.
Since I'm working with DV video, I want every drop of image quality I can get, so rendering in 16-bit sounds much better to me.

Obviously, this is a BIG advantage for the Adobe package, because AE is so well integrated with Premier. I'd need Automatic Duck to move from FCP to AE. (I already own AE CS3)

I'm pretty sure that the Rebel's Guide came out before the days of Apple Color, so it's probably out-of-date in this area. If I decided to go for FC Sudio, could I color correct and render out of Color in 16-bit?

Is it still the norm for NLEs to render in 8-bit only? I understand that professionals will "online" on a different system, but those are well out of my range. I can't afford any more than the one package from either Apple or Adobe.

Thank you very much,

Also, Stu wrote the DVRG before FCS2 and the addition of Color to the package... That changed the situation significantly

Darn, I thought this was going to make the choice easy!
*sigh*
I'll keep researching.

Thanks for the help, guys!
