Im about to buy a 7D and wanted to be sure I know how to convert the footage to edit on my computer. Can anyone explain how to convert clips from h.264 to the best format to edit on?

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

If you're using CS5 then the best format is just H.264. If not, then use Mpeg Streamclip to transcode to Prores 422 HQ.

Dave W. is right, this is probably the most common solution.

Otherwise, I've heard only good things from Neoscene to transcode footage to work with older version of Premiere.

im pretty new to editing, and i shoot on p2 media so i have never had to transcode before I start editing. Can you tell me how, or give me a link to a good tutorial? I edit on a PC and cut on CS4. THANKS

Here's a thread. Be sure to install DNxHD before Mpeg Streamclip if that's the route you decide to take. Also, there's only a hint of a drop-down menu (containing the output choices) in the program's interface that's easy to miss. You'll know it when you see it.
