7d footage appears darker in Premiere CS5

Editing a feature I shot on a Canon 7d and noticed that the footage looks fine when I view the videos with Quicktime, but in my Premiere CS5 project it appears darker, as if the blacks are more crushed. Any ideas?

Ok thanks for the cryptic answer. Google's tellin me that means that Premiere clips the highlights and blacks to 16-235 automatically...is there any way to get that information back on screen?

it was google friendly.

i don't use premiere's color correction tools. but it's fairly easy to color correct.

1- open or view the vector scopes and zebras, histogram mode usually under window in the menu bar or in the view menu bar.

2- adjust with something like the 3way color corrector or whatever tool available in premiere.

some containers and codecs will limit to 16-235, so be aware on export what settings to use.

So you're saying that Premiere doesn't totally drop the 0-255 on import, it just displays it as 16-235 so you have a better idea of what it might look like when you export?

not that familiar with premiere.

i have no idea what it does, or why it does it. but it's assumed that it will handle files differently.

depending on the file container and the codec, it might be forced to go to 16-235 or display everything in 0-255.

inconsistencies due to the file format used is inevitable.

solutions on the other hand,

if you use a file format and codec similar to the exported file format(has the same gamma and settings and abilities and attributes), you might find more consistent results.

I've noticed in windows Quicktime does a gamma lift to all the videos it plays back due to 1.8 and 2.2 gamma inconsistancies between the platforms.

This really shouldn't be an issue anymore since Mac OS X runs 2.2 gamma now (along with the rest of the world), but this is Apple we're talking about. Quicktime gets the shaft on Windows all the time.

I would trust that Premiere Pro CS5 is displaying what was really recorded. I spoke with their Engineers at NAB 2010 and said that they got the gamma guessing on all different kinds of Quicktime formats correct with CS5, including DSLR footage.
