7D and DVX Squeeze Footage on Same Timeline

Is this possible? I'm freakin positive it's already been answered somewhere on DVXuser but I've not found a thing on it yet.

I'm teetering on the fence whether to buy a 7D or just a 35mm adapter for my DVX. Please someone push me over to the extra camera side...

Step one when getting footage from a DSLR is to transcode it into something else. Most people go for ProRes.

Is your final output going to be HD or SD?

Most likely standard def but with widescreen due to the DVX squeeze mode. I've never worked with HD so the whole Canon 7D footage will be new to me. So, I could see going to 444 pro res or something with the 7D stuff.

I would just transcode to regular ProRes 422. ProRes 422 HQ or ProRes 4444 would just be overkill.

So that's it then? I can then just drop the HD or SD 422 footage into the same timeline as my DVX squeezed footage? Thanks!

The only other complication is if you didn't shoot everything in the same frame rate. Although FCP boasts that you can drop whatever you want into the timeline the results aren't always the best.

I will be shooting 24pa on the dvx almost exclusively. The only exceptions would be if I shot 30p or 60i to acheive slo mo. But in those cases I'd want it on a 23.98 timeline anyway.

Kinda depends what you're after. The 7D is night and day different from the DVX- HD vs DV, manual lenses much much more shallow depth of field, etc. Also I personally think it's a bit harder to get acceptable images out of next to the dvx but not impossible. That said you can get simply amazing shots that the DVX could never do.

Thanks for replying Noah. I'm thinking I'll need a lot of practice with it before I can cut the two cameras on the same timeline and not making it too obvious. The best part about the 7D in my case is that my wife and I are also photo fanatics so even if DSLR video doesn't strike my fancy the 7D will be a nice step up from our current Canon 1000D.

It sounds like overall, I will be able to cut DVX squeeze and Canon 7D footage on the same timeline though. That was my big question.

Thanks

I bought the 7D last week! I think I made the right decision. I'm also going through the FCP training series on color grading and I'm confident I'll be able to match the images from both cams to an acceptable level. I'll be using the 7D for shallow DOF and the DVX for the wider DOF shots.

My challenge now is to get a wider dynamic range out of the 7D so I will have more to work with in post.
