75mm Ball Grease/501 refurb

I salvaged a tripod out of storage. I noticed that the half ball that mounts in the tripod had some grease on it. Any suggestions on what type of grease to replace it with once I clean it up?

Also, I have a 501 head, 7 years old. Can't say that it's in need of repair, but would like to refurb it for its "second chance" at life.
 
I dont know of the bowl mounts requiring grease/ my 100mm works fine for fast positioning, my camera head does the pan and tilts
