720pn issue with FCP5

Ok, so I'm editing for the first time with Final Cut 5.0.4. I've just shot a ton of footage with the HVX/RedRock combo. I'm flipping the image using the motion tab, when I view it in the viewer it looks great, full size, no issues.

When I place it on the timeline and do a fullscreen preview, its a smaller size and it appears to have a ton of interlacing.... what am I doing wrong here?

Wrong sequence settings. Make sure the sequence settings match those of the clips. Also, keep in mind when you do a full screen preview, if the footage is not the exact resolution of your monitor, FCP scales it and you can get artifacts. The artifacts tend to be worse if your footage is interlaced.

RENDER THE FOOTAGE. Sorry...don't mean to shout, but no doubt you have the light green render bar above the footage...

I used the easy set up and picked the 720p24 selection... shouldn't that be the right one?

If i do a preview from the viewer, its great.... once i drop it in the timeline and view it, crap.

rendering doesn't help.

If you shot 720p24, from what I understand on the HVX it is still recorded at 60p, and you have to conform it to 24p. What's happening is that the viewer is playing the file at the full 60fps which is why it looks normal. Search for and install the DVCPRO HD frame rate convertor. It is a plug in that creates a new menubar item in FCP and should be in your extras folder. If not you can download it from panasonic for free. It's already installed in FCP6. You highlight your clip and select DVCPRO frame rate convertor, and it will make final cut read your file as 24p (it doesn't actually make a new file). Or you could take the easy route and make your sequence 60p, but at some stage you're going to want to conform everything to 24p.

Changing the timeline with the clips still in it won't work. You have to make a new timeline and paste the clips into it.

boy do i feel stupid... i thought you could change it on the fly... it works now that i created a new project and selected the right settings from the get go...

THANK YOU GUYS.....

I'm so dumb, lol

Nah, it's actually confusing, and a pitfall of working with P2 cards. With DVCPRO HD tape, you can have the extra frames removed while capturing and end up with pure 24p clips. If I were you I'd still try removing those extra frames now with the DVCPRO HD convertor to get a 24p timeline off the bat. Saves a lot of trouble down the line.

Hmm. After further research, I think your problem is that you are cutting in final cut 5.0.4. In 5.1, when you import your P2 clips, you're given the option of removing the duplicate frames so you get a true 24p clip instead of 59.94.

"Once you select Import Panasonic P2, the Import Panasonic P2 tool window will appear. The Import Panasonic P2 tool will by default select the connected FireStore FS-100 as the source for your P2 media clips. Version 5.1 of FCP offers an additional Remove Duplicate/Adv. Pull-down Frames option that lets you remove duplicate frames when transferring P2 footage to an FCP scratch disk. By checking this option during P2 import, FCP will create a QuickTime file at the native frame rate that coincides with the actual frame rate to which the Panasonic AG-HVX200 was set during recording.

Simply put, if you set the HVX200 to record 720/24p (Advanced Pulldown) or 720/30p, checking the Remove Duplicate/Adv. Pull-down Frames option will remove the added frames during import and produce a genuine 24p (23.98) or 30p clip, depending on which format mode you captured in. (As of this writing, the P2 formats DVCPRO HD 1080/24P and 1080/30P are not yet natively supported in FCP 5.1.1.) Highlight the clips you want to import and select the Import button. To import all of the available FS-100 P2 clips, select the Import All button."
