720 camera options?

I'm budgeting for a documentary that will require travel and location shooting.

I need to buy two cameras that can shoot in 720 or higher and Native 24 would be great.

To be honest I want the HVX200. I've worked a lot with it and love it. However, P2 Cards or a bulky firestore are not an option for this project as I'm likely to be in hairy locations and away from a place to dump cards for a long time.

I'm hunting around for options but anyone with hands on ideas please help.

Thanks.

Jade. Thanks dude.

Yeah, just I know this cam. Pretty decent images but it is way too big.

There must be something smaller that will do the trick.

When it comes to 24p there's few options, especially small size. In fact, the HV20 is the only one that's small. Why 720p? JVC is the only company that makes exclusively 720p camera, and only their HD shoulder mounted class offers 24p. The XH-A1 do 1080p 24F and it's a simple downconversion to 720p in post.

Jade, yeah the XH-A1 looks pretty good.

It wasn't that I needed 720 just no less than 720. 1080 is great.

The A1 looks pretty great. Not sure what the difference between 24F and 24p is....

But this cam looks the best so far for what I'm needing. Please keep the ideas coming...

Looking at the Sony HVR-A1U HDV Camcorder. Looks small. Shoots 24p at 1080.

Has 2 XLR imputs. Records to Tape.

Haven't seen images from it yet...

XHA1's a bit heavier than the DVX, but size-wise they're pretty comparable. Sounds like the best option for you though Rook. The HVR-A1 is also nice and small, but the larger sensors in the XHA1 would seem to provide better image quality (from what I've been told).

Is there a better HDV in the A1's price range? I am squeamish from the fringing/aberration I seem to see in most A1 footage here. Some of it is awful.

Really? I haven't even seen a grab. Got a link?

I'd hate to drop cash on two only to have a bad image.

A1U doesn't shoot 24p. It has Cineframe24 mode which is widely considered to be horrible.

The Sony V1u shoots 1080 24p, but it has issues with its image.... it has a funny artifact. ITs called Oilpaint effect. and the image crawls with these weird noise like, slugs of color.... its looks bizzzare.

The CAnon A1's are great. i think that will fill your needs perfectly. it has a sharp picture, decent color, good use of HDV codec, ad 24F is FWIW 24p. Good machine. The lens does have some chromatic abberation, but not significantly more than any other HD camera.

You are are F*ckin' awesome with info. I'm always impressed.

The Ai was my other choice but is substantially more expensive. Does anyone know where I can DL a raw clip from either Cam so I can bring it into my NLE and see how it handles?

That would be really helpful.

Thanks.:

From your stills links...this is what I am talking about with the A1...aberration issue...certainly not on every frame. But I don't seem to see that with the HVX.

But it can still happen. And it'll happen on an HPX500 if you have an inexpensive non-CAC lens. It happens to some degree on all the (comparatively) inexpensive cameras.
