720 60p DVCpro hd and FCP

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know when your editing on FCP on a 720 24p preset sequence, if this is actually a 720 60p base?

It seems that most sdi display PCIe cards only dislpay 720 60p, and I dont know if that means after your removethe pulldown or if that is with. I would think it measn with or without the pulldown because who would want to look at 60p footage all the time, it will be slowed down all the time until your remove the pulldown.

Thanks

What a card can display will not affect how FCP works with the footage. The specs on a grahpics card do not effect the frame rate of format that the footage is actually in, only what it can display on a monitor. So if the card states it can not play 720p24, you won't see 24p on a monitor. But FCP doesn't care and will be processing the footage as 24p anyway. You'll just end up with funky looking playback. That is, if I understand the question properly.

HEy ben,

thanks for the reply. I am getting closer to the answer every minute. Basically the situation I can gather now is that the sdi cards will only display 720 60p. The footage I will have be the footage from the fs-100 with the new fireware update, which removes the pulldown auto.

What I have have to assume is that when the fs-100 removes the pulldown, it knocks the footage down to either 29.97 or 23.98. I would then have to take this footage and edit it on a 720 60p timeline in FCP to be able to display the footage through the sdi card. The drawback is that I will have to render all the footage on the timeline before viewing it. I want to avoid this as much as possible.

I am having a hard time grasping this new 720 60p timeline since it seems like it is running at 60 fps, but if i put a 23.98 fps piece of footage on it and render it, I get the same footage as if I put the same footage onto a 23.98 timeline. But when I export both timelines, the 60p one is much larger. It sounds like the 60p timline adds all the extra frames which ends up looking like 23.98.

So now, I have to decide, sacrifice disk space on the fs-100 to view footage on the external monitor, or forget the monitor and use the pulldown removal that will be in the new firmware.

Just watched your watched your video and it helped.

What I got from it is that I should not use the new feature where the fs-100 removes the pulldown becuase that would mean I need to edit it on a 24p timeline . It sounds like the hs-100 currently likes to keep the footahe in 60p, and only when neccesary I remove the pulldown if I have overcranked or undercranked the footage on the camera.

Thank you for the footage and any more advice is awesome!

I'd say just buy a card that can handle what you edit. Save yourself the headaches.

I'd strongly suggest getting Barry's HVX book and reading up on how all those frame rates work. You're confusing some issues here, and I'm really bad at explaining it.

60p is 60fps, progressive, that's what you get. 60i is 29.97fps interlace, thus it is actually 60 fields (not frames) per second. There's no need to change your frame rates just cause your video card can't play that back.

Get Barry's book, it's very worth while.

No, use pulldown removal to get native 24p footage. Use the Frame Rate Converter for over/under cranked footage, NOT the pulldown removal.

I am slowly getting it. I understand a lot of the technology, it is just this new 60p that is throwing me off. I have been working with 24pA footage and 23.98 fps timelines in fcp for years and now I am in a whole new ball game.

BAsically I am having trouble firguring out how 720 60p has 24p footage on it without having to render it and use the pulldown removal. The book you recommend sounds like what I need.

Thank you so much for helping, having a community helps out us inexperienced buttheads.

I think i get it though, all the dvcprohd footage should be edited in a 720 60p timeline, and that is why all the cards that display through sdi connectors can only down convert from 60p. The matrox is a good example, it only can work with 60p, nothing else.

I will probably get the card soon, but will most likely get the camera first then test and make sure.

1st, you don't have to capture through the card, so that's not an issue.

2nd, in non-Native modes, the HVX records a regular NTSC video file, with the "Native" frames flagged, by adding what's called pulldown. When you import your P2 data, there is no capture, the Matrox card does nothing in this process.

If you import with advanced pulldown removal, you get only the native 24p clip. If you don't, you get the 60i clip (it's actually not 60p, I don't believe).

If you record in Native modes, you don't have to do the pulldown removal, since only the 24p fps frames are recorded.

You'll continue to work in 24p in FCP like you normally do. You'll just import footage, rather than capture it in real time. Aside from that, there's not much difference.

Yeah, get Barry's book and DVD set, they're super worth the money.
