Hi!
I have a client who wants 720p footaged downrezzed to Standard Defintion for editing purposes, with the final output being 720x480 16:9 played at 29.97 fps. I can downrez the footage beautifully but the problem seems to be that it was shot at 23.98fps. When i convert the framerate to 29.97 the footage looks absolutely disgusting. What is the proper method to convert 24p footage to 60i(or 29.97) for dvd playback on SD televisions? Thankyou!

You're client is in an old offline/online mindset. And offline/online with tapeless footage...especially with FRAME RATE changes...is very messy, and not worth the problems. DVCPRO HD 720p at 23.98 has a 5.6MB/s data rate...opposed to the 3.6MB/s DV data rate. VERY close. Very editable on firewire 400 drives. COnvince him to work at full res. Offlining at SD 29.97 when the online footage is 23.98 simply won't reconnect.

Interesting. one more question for you. I have more footage to shoot for the client, i still want to shoot it in HD and then downrez, but to avoid further problems would it help if i shot it at 30p? or 108060i? what would be the best option?
also, the client seems to think that he needs the fooage at 60i(29.97) so the dvd will work on SD NTSC televisions. will downrezzed 720-24pN footage still work on those televisions?

Hollywood films on DVDs are 24fps...how do they look? Pretty darn good, huh? So yeah, 23.98...24fps...will look fine.

Don't start mixing frame rates now! Keep shooting how you are shooting, especially if this is the same project. What you need to do is school the client on the new workflows available to them...and with tapeless, best to avoid the offline/online workflow. You already have the footage imported at full res, so why take up MORE space by making offline res versions? Why risk issues with re-linking? Especially when DVCPRO HD 720p23.98 data rates are so low? And if they want to offline anyway, then you can make low res 23.98 proxies...offline RT HD saves a TON of space. GOing to DV makes little sense, as you aren't saving that much space.

Now, any more workflow advice and I'll have to start billing you...
