$70 a year for 100% DVX coverage - even against boneheads (like me)

I realize this is probably something experienced users already know about or have - but maybe some newbies like myself will find this useful...

I took out a renters' insurance policy today with State Farm and asked them several questions about my DVX - is it covered away from home, what if it's stolen from my car, etc., etc. I was happy to find out that there is something called a Personal Articles Policy whereby you can insure a single specific item or group of items. Here's the best part - it covers not just against theft or fire, but even if I klutz out and drop the thing. 100% coverage with NO DEDUCTIBLE for $68 bucks a year! Forget about extended warranties - this even covers if damage occurs due to my own stupidity (which is not always lacking, unfortunately.)

Now, this only covers for those who do not use their camera to make their living (I'm sure most of those guys already have business policies with liability ins. and such). You are still covered, however, even if you are using the camera to make money. The example the policy book used was a part-time wedding videographer. In other words, you can't use this as a substitute for a full-on business policy, I guess. Now, don't call yourself a "freelance videographer" because then you're not covered. Bizarre, I know. Isn't a wedding videographer basically freelancing? My agent said this was probably a result of journalists and such who take their equipment to Iraq, for instance, - too high a risk.

Anyhow, IMO this is the first "accessory" anyone should buy after a UV filter. For the record - I don't work for State Farm or anything; I'm sure other companies offer similar policies.

Okay, if anyone does this make sure you have your receipt or some proof of purchase. I'm hoping I can find my stinking receipt or call buydig.com and get a copy of my invoice.

Oh yeah, Bob. I should have mentioned that in my initital post! If you bought it with your credit card maybe they could help get a receipt?

Dude I've shooting for 13 years and have had many types of expensive pro insurance, which I'm not interested in getting right now, but I have never heard of that one! Wow! thanks for that ditty. This is perfect to cover just my DSR11 and DVX.

I was wondering if the Personal Articles Policy also covers manufacturer defects that can result in the loss of operation to your equipment.

Any info?

I just confirmed with State Farm that the Personal Articles Policy does not cover manufacturer defects, which is what a Mack warranty does.

It looks like the coverage is great if you drop it or it gets stolen, but if your camera breaks down because of a defect it won't be covered by state farm, in this sense doesn't a mack warranty seem worth it?

I'm not advocating fraud here, but... 1) how could they prove it was a manufacturer's issue and not the result of an accident and 2) you might find yourself getting a bit clumsy when you discover your camera's defect and, who knows, you could even accidentally drop it from a balconey..

REVISION: I should say that having both (mack and personal) would be the ideal, if you can afford it.

Could I just get the insurance for my camera and assorted equipment......about $6500 worth? Or do I have to already have a policy with State Farm or another insurance company? Just wondering if I can call them up and JUST get insurance for 70 bux a year. Thanks.

Don't need other policies with State Farm. Not sure how multiple items would be insured, though. I don't know if you can put several items in one policy or seperate policies for each. The $68 a year I paid is strictly for camera at a $3500 value. More value = higher price I'm sure. I'm certain you can't take out a $6500 policy for the price of my $3500 policy - how much more you'd pay I have no idea. State Farm just happens to be who I used - might be worth shopping around to other companies that offer home and renters' insurance as they would be likely to have policies for personal belongings.
