64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

This P4 is not true 64bit, it is 32 that emulates 64. It can run 64bit software though. I don't see true 64bit from Intel anytime soon this year!

Cheers!

Now you have me intrigued! Why your interest? Are you thinking what I think you are thinking? Answering your question Athlon is 64bit. Does the software (OS included) out there takes full advantage of it? Nope!

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

well im planning on upgrading in the next few months and i want some form of futureproofing since windows 64 bit edition is coming Q1 2006. i dont plan on upgrading for 3-4 years (that's what i've been doing for ages and it seems to work perfectly). Not sure what to get..athlon64 or intel...hrmmmm. I hear the Prescotts generate LOTS of heat and consume lots of electricity which is a huge downside for me, and the athlon64's are not as good at decoding as intel...grrr

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

If I were you I would not invest in computer technology unless your business really depends on it and you are due for an upgrade now. I have a Mac G4 dual 500 MHz, that is I'd say 4 years old now, it still work great with current OSX and FCP versions. My plans are to upgrade to G5 summer next year. If I were a PC guy I would wait, next year there will be new generation Pentiums but the real breakthrough will be in 2006!

haha i cant wait, my pc is a 1.4ghz AMD processor and runs ass slow!

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

I have an AMD64 FX-51, and it's great. It runs 32-bit applications just as fast or faster as any P4 3.2.

Windows XP 64-bit Edition is due out Q1 of 2005. As of yet, I have not heard of any plans for 64-bit software, though.

The main advantage to a 64-bit CPU/OS is the ability to address massive amounts of RAM, mainly for high-end CAD and scientific applications (for now).

If you like to be bleeding edge (like me) then you may consider upgrading. I have realized that in order to see a *real* performance boost, I'll need to add another Gig of RAM and a pair of 10,000 RPM SATA hard drives in a RAID config.

We're talking expensive hardware, gentlemen.

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

Too bad Intel doesn't have a 64-bit desktop CPU out yet--we'd have Windows XP 64 already if that was the case! ;)

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

Fear not! Remember this a matter of software-hardware availability. What good is to have a 64bit hardware when you are not going to release the software for another year. I bet all my Macs that the Intel P(whatever) will be out around the same time Microsoft is about to release their 64bit OS. But c'mon guys, 32 still does the job! ::)

Cheers!

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

Don't forget bus speed, the bus for these 64 bit computers can be upto 4x as fast as the current 32 bit computers. So after all if traffic is flowing faster on the interstate you can get to work faster. Right now thats biggest advantage to the 64 bit computers I've seen. I'm buying a laptop right now and it'll be a 64 bit, for a few reasons. First is technology doesn't move backward, so I'd bet 64 bit applications will be coming soon. Second they're price/performance competitive. Third I don't see any reason to stay in the 32 bit world. So I'm off to the 64 bit horizon

Re: 64bit Intel Processors available in Tokyo

Gopher, thanks for the adding that huge advantage of 64-bit processing. And welcome to 64-bit computing! Can't wait for the apps and OS, but we'll be ready when they are...
