60gb/hr

I thought HDV was 14gb/hr
I just got a MBP and in Imovie it says 1 hr of HDV is about 60 gb.

I was Premiere a lot and 1 hr is 14gb.
I was just curious about what Imovie is doing.
Does Final Cut do the same?

It is probably talking about DVCPROHD, not HDV. DVCPROHD 60i is about 60GB per hour. HDV is roughly 13GB per hour.

I don't use Imovie or HDV, so I am unsure of the work flow.

As far as FCP: Final cut does not ingest the footage as contents of a 'packaged file', like Imovie. FCP puts the footage in a Contents folder on your hard drive. It's data rate is based on what you tell FCP to ingest it as. DVCPROHD 960x540 with a frame rate of 24p(n) from a p2 card will be ingested at roughly 23GB per minute. If it were any frame rate 'over 60' (such as 60p, 24p, 30p...etc.) it will be roughly 60GB per minute. The only way around this is to remove any duplicate frames that might be there (such as found in 24pa).

If you were to ingest HDV as proRes or an uncompressed format in FCP, it would would create far greater file sizes than that of the original HDV data rate.

iMovie and FCE transcode HDV and AVCHD into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) which is much larger than native HDV. FCP is the only Apple app that handles HDV natively.
